The Bible has all sorts of different stories about this.
“Help themselves” might apply to the Tower of Babel - didn’t turn out too well. King David - helped himself to a soldier’s wife and sent the soldier to be killed. He was still blessed by God, but was also punished.
Of course their are other examples of Godly men (Jesus and Job) that experienced personal tragedy but ultimately fulfilled God’s will.
One of our pastors talks about how it is OUR job to bring about God’s kingdom on earth (to be the hands and feet of God). “Yeah - I look at all of my failures and faults - if I was God that’s not how I would have designed it - but there it is.”
Perhaps not so much “God helps those who help themselves” - but “God helps those who follow God and help others.” Abraham and Joseph (in Egypt) would be good examples.
