Biden says Trump executive order is 'a reckless war on Social Security'
MSN ^ | Aug 8 2020 | J. Edward Moreno

Former Vice President Joe Biden on Saturday called President Trump's executive order to cut payroll taxes "a reckless war on Social Security."

One of the several orders Trump signed from his private club in Bedminster, N.J., Saturday afternoon directs the Treasury Department to allow employers to defer payment of employee-side Social Security payroll taxes through the end of the year for Americans making less than roughly $100,000 annually.

Trump also said that he intends to forgive the deferred payroll taxes and make permanent payroll tax cuts if he is reelected in November.

In an emailed statement addressing the president's order, Biden said that such a move would "undermine the entire financial footing of Social Security."

The presumptive Democratic nominee said that unlike the 2012 payroll tax plan put forth by the Obama administration, Trump's executive order does not appear to include "protections or guarantees that the Social Security Trust Fund will be made whole."

"He is laying out his roadmap to cutting Social Security," Biden said. "Our seniors and millions of Americans with disabilities are under enough stress without Trump putting their hard-earned Social Security benefits in doubt."

Well that’s up to you, there is at least one other presidential candidate.

But my understanding is the tax is deferred. It will still be due at tax time.
Trump said he would make it permanent if re-elected. So if it’s a concern for you, vote for another.

” a tax that funds Social Security. “
No.
It doesn’t.

LOL!
Someone should come along and point you to a link that explains this.
The SS check is paid by present day taxes, not anything else.

Stop the fear mongering“

Trump shouldn’t be cutting the tax for Social Security right before the election. You can cause me of fear monger omg, but there are millions of seniors who rely on Social Security, and Trump has handed the Democrats a weapon to use against him with these seniors. You can try all day to explain why they shouldn’t be concerned, but it wasn’t smart of Trump - in my opinion - to raise this as an issue and create concerns among one of his main voter bases, 90 days before the vote

Now that I think about it a little more, this may be a very clever move/trap that President Trump has set for the dems.

Haven't we heard rumblings from our POTUS about possibly replacing SS with what may be a better alternative?

This may force the left into that very argument and I don't think the Biden camp thought about this very well and their response was entirely predictable, so President Trump is now guiding these lemmings towards a path that actually is against the left’s interests in this subject.

Hmm...

False. It’s a “holiday” not a cancellation of the tax, not a cut

You can explain it however you like, but creating a controversy where it’s necessary to explain to people why they shouldn’t be afraid, is not smart politics, in my opinion

(especially when you have to resort to bureaucratic euphemisms and hair-splitting like “holiday”, as if that’s going to reassure the blue collar social security recipients in DesMoines or Dubuque)

You can vote for Trump or you can spread the lie.

Which side are you on?

One thing I forgot to take into account is that this is Trump and this is still being negotiated. I can see $600 week, $1200 check, eviction and student loan relief, no tax cut, no democrat pork and no additional democrat election fraud. I’d take that as a win.

Yea, this will certainly turn the Federal Budget Surplus into a Deficit.

Oh wait...

If the Dems really cared about having enough money generated to fund SS, they’d have Republican economic policies and wouldn’t have shut down the economy in a move to boot Trump and implement socialism.

Well, if one knows this is false and is concerned only with the success of a narrative based upon a falsehood, then OK.

I wish I had a link handy to explain this. I realize it would help you and your friends.
But it was explained SO long ago.
Do hope someone with one in their favorites comes along.

There’s even a rumor that Clinton was impeached because he wanted to spend some payroll taxes to strengthen the SS system instead of allowing Congress to spend it on getting votes.

All Trump needs to do is assure the seniors they will get their social security - they will be plenty of funds for that. Perhaps the youngsters will get less - maybe - but they don’t even think about social security.

I’m for Trump, which is why I’m concerned he took a move that will worry one of his main voter bases. As I mentioned, one of the reasons the GOP lost the 2018 congressional races is that McConnell ran his trap about cutting Social Security right before the election - giving the Democrats an opportunity to put out ads on the topic, targeting seniors. Trump has made a similar mistake, in my opinion, Because I want him to win, I hope he strongly speaks up and makes it clear he won’t let Social Security funding be reduced. It’s too bad he created a situation where he has to calm his senior voter base

You're focusing on an attempt to make this look like a mistake, and you're not taking into account critical thinking.

Do you think that this wasn't predicted by his administration?

Do you think that you have a better alternative? If so, why aren't you part of his administration, or running for POTUS yourself?

Why do so many otherwise intelligent Freepers think they have thought this through much better than the President and his administration? This administration has made some unforced errors, but overall, they have done an outstanding job and seem to have our best interests in mind. They've demonstrated their skills but still you cannot trust them and instantly go on the attack as if you know better.

Yeah, he sure lost your vote fast. Enjoy living under the Biden regime. And Social Security in a lock box doesn’t exist. The money goes into the general funds to be spent up by our politicians as they wish and have done so for an eternity. If SS gets low, the politicians will replenish it or die on the voting vine.

That's your opinion. Have you paused for a moment to consider that this response was already factored in yet the action still taken as it was the BEST of the alternatives available? When was it deemed necessary to consult with your brilliance before they take action?

Cutting payroll taxes does not weaken anything. Please stop thinking like a socialist.

The more people working, the more revenue for SS and the lower the payroll tax can go. What’s so hard to understand?
