Biden says Trump executive order is 'a reckless war on Social Security'
MSN ^ | Aug 8 2020 | J. Edward Moreno

Former Vice President Joe Biden on Saturday called President Trump's executive order to cut payroll taxes "a reckless war on Social Security."

One of the several orders Trump signed from his private club in Bedminster, N.J., Saturday afternoon directs the Treasury Department to allow employers to defer payment of employee-side Social Security payroll taxes through the end of the year for Americans making less than roughly $100,000 annually.

Trump also said that he intends to forgive the deferred payroll taxes and make permanent payroll tax cuts if he is reelected in November.

In an emailed statement addressing the president's order, Biden said that such a move would "undermine the entire financial footing of Social Security."

The presumptive Democratic nominee said that unlike the 2012 payroll tax plan put forth by the Obama administration, Trump's executive order does not appear to include "protections or guarantees that the Social Security Trust Fund will be made whole."

"He is laying out his roadmap to cutting Social Security," Biden said. "Our seniors and millions of Americans with disabilities are under enough stress without Trump putting their hard-earned Social Security benefits in doubt."

Whatever you think of Social Security, it doesn’t strike me as good politics to weaken its funding structure right before an election. Tens of millions of seniors rely on Social Security. They also vote, and probably the majority voted for Trump last time. If they get scared about their financial futures, will they vote for Trump again?

No doubt, but Trump just cut funding for Social Security right before an election. Trump has given the Democrats an ad to use against him with seniors.

Sounds like Biden is planning on losing since the tax is only deferred.

As expected. The Biden campaign must be consulting with several like-minded Freepers whose posts predicted this.

Fortunately, this claim is easily refuted by pointing out the details, and this scare tactic always fails as the only idiots who buy into this specious argument are already voting for the left.

It doesn't matter what course President Trump took, these pinheads were going to squeal about it anyways.

President Trump took the best option available and I have little doubt that this response was already factored in.

Now we can hear from the pearl clutching pussies on FR.

Predictable.

All of his executive orders today put Democrats on the defensive - except the payroll tax cut. It gives Democrats a way to undermine Trumps support among seniors, because it restricts the amount of revenue for Social Security at a time when the program is already paying out more than it takes in. It won’t be hard for Dems to make seniors worry their benefits will have to be cut. Those seniors vote.

Democrats: "Let's lie and say SS taxes go to SS and not to the general fund like it actually does!"
Media: "Okay!"

Yeah, lying to old people is a great thing for Dems and the media to do.

Those payroll taxes go to the general fund for Congress to spend as they wish. They always have. That's why SS is underfunded-: there are more vote-producing things for politicians to spend that money on- with the media's connivance to hide the facts from voters.

Only for the ill-informed. In order for it to have any permanent impact Trump needs to be re-elected.

“fortunately, this claim is easily refuted by pointing out the details”

What are the details that protect Social Security from losing funding? I haven’t seen those details and would like to know - so I can reassure some relatives who are on Social Security and have expressed some worry (they voted for Trump by the way).

When do the SS checks stop coming? When do those checks come with a lower total?

There is no SS “lockbox”, and that BS argument was exposed long ago.

Stop the fear mongering. There is no lock box.
Biden or Trump? This is war. There’s no third choice.

Like race baiting the democrats roll out the efforts to panic seniors about Social Security every election. They are quite good at it. This might be the only thing Biden can remember how to do. After all he has selling that same hokum for fifty years. The democrats will get some mileage out of this approach.

“ In order for it to have any permanent impact Trump needs to be re-elected“

You mean, in order for Social Security funding to be permanently cut, Trump would need to be re-elected? How is that an argument seniors to vote for Trump?

It's "good politics" if you can accuse Trump of "trying to starve Granny"...

Trump just gave them this argument by cutting a tax that funds Social Security. A very strange thing for him to do right before an election.

Trump's executive order does not appear to include "protections or guarantees that the Social Security Trust Fund will be made whole."

False. It's a "holiday" not a cancellation of the tax, not a cut, not a rebate, just a deferment of debt owed. The order even mentions the need for future legislation to "forgive" the money owed from the holiday.

Everyone, probably Trump included, saw this boring Soc Sec attack line coming.
