In the 1970s, I went to a highly competitive, highly selective Eastern college. The President was a handsome, middle-aged man in great suits and ties who was also an up-to-date Leftist. While President of the College, he got himself arrested at a Vietnam War protest, which was then a chic, "look-at-me" form of rebellion for men in supposedly responsible positions.

He was married, of course. It was later revealed that the Dean of the Faculty--a man of academic stature and principle--told the President that he must not have his mistress, a hot young junior faculty member, parking her zap-red sports car overnight in the driveway of the President's house while his wife was away. Because it would be noticed, and would be a bad example to the students.

Several years later, the President's wife left him on account of things like that. Not long afterward, the President committed suicide with a handgun.

Of course the Dean was right. Furthermore, because of the Sexual Devolution mores that were running wild then, the students were also setting a bad example for their President.

Behavior is powerful. We should always be aware that we will often be unaware when someone is being uplifted or sent to perdition with the help of our example.
