Tennessee Republicans pick Bill Hagerty for Lamar Alexander’s Senate seat
Roll Call ^ | August 6, 2000 | Chris Cioffi

With President Donald Trump pumping up supporters ahead of Thursday’s primary, former U.S. Ambassador to Japan Bill Hagerty fended off a late surge by orthopedic surgeon Manny Sethi to win the Republican nomination to succeed retiring GOP Sen. Lamar Alexander.

Trump, who first endorsed Hagerty last year, reminded voters in a July 31 tweet of his “Complete and Total Endorsement!” and called Hagerty an “outstanding man and one of the best Ambassadors ever (Japan).”

Hagerty wins. I’ve grown used to losing, but this one grinds a bit. I will vote for him in November, although I have the same sort of pit in my stomach feeling like I had when Romney was our Presidential nominee. (I voted third party that year.) Hagerty will almost certainly win in November, although I suspect that this might possibly go from “Safe Republican” to “Lean Republican” at some point. Hagerty’s dishonest, scorched earth, last minute advertising blitz didn’t win him a lot of friends and made a lot of enemies. I’m pretty sure that I will be voting against him in six years in the Republican primary. Voting for wicked, dishonest men is disheartening. I think that our guys would do well in the future to campaign vigorously but also honestly. That way those who supported their opponent would be more likely to enthusiastically support them. I will vote for him in November, but not enthusiastically, and I won’t campaign for him. Sorry. That’s just how it is. Flame away if you wish. Conservatives in Tennessee have traditionally been the red-headed stepchildren of the big business, establishment wing of the party. The Lamar/Corker/GOP-e wing holds the reins. It gets old. It could be that some day they may need us, and we won’t be there. Probably not, though. It seems that we are destined to lick their shoes and say, “Yes, Massah.” Hagerty needs to know that there are wounds that need to be healed. It will be interesting to see how he proceeds. Or not. I have yardwork and other things to do between now and November.

He had better not hang around with Romney.

Totally agree with your assessment. I didn’t like the negativity of the campaign and the fact that he’s an entrenched insider. Will be Lamar Alexander, Bob Corker “lite” for a couple of years until he digs his heels into the swamp operations. Also lost my primary vote for the Congressional Candidate in NE TN who will be running to replace the retiring Phil Roe (R) who was written about as having the “Hillary cattle futures” touch on his stock holdings while “serving” the taxpayers. Made several millions (one of the top earnings on his holdings). His apparent Republican primary winner is the wife of grifters who moved to Tennessee from Kansas. She was one of the “operating officers” of her husband’s pharmaceutical operation in Kansas; said husband served in the Federal lockup and was fined well over $1 mil for importing weakened dialysis and cancer drugs from China and charging veterans and Medicare patients for legit drugs. I hate to be so jaded, but I’ve lost total faith in the political system. Crooks and fakers win every time!

I voted for Sethi, but I'll still vote for Hags in November.

Jayzus, now TN has 6 more years of another Alexander swamp clone.

Really gutted over this.

Marquita Bradshaw is leading on the D side...she raised $8k and spent slightly less than $6k. Mackler spent $1.5M.

I’m in SW Va next to the border and am surprised at the success the Swamp has in Tenn. Of course it’s worse here obviously.

As a vet, I’ll miss Roe. He did a great job making Mountain
Home Vet hosp a treasure.

You have my sympathy. I’m going to wash my hands with alcohol and bleach after I vote for Martha McSally in Arizona come November. Sucks, but it is what it is.

He’s Willard’s butt boy. His old Campaign Finance Manager.

Disgusting. Reminds me once again why I’m not a Republican. When the GOP offers up a Conservative, I’ll gladly vote for them. When they offer a piece of $hit, I’ll flush it.

Alexander didn’t give financial support to Al Gore for President.

Slick Willie Hagerty DID.

.....”Voting for wicked, dishonest men is disheartening”...

But they do know the game and how to play it tough when needed. I recall Trump saying when he ran before.....that he would appoint and or support some people we would disagree with.....

“The establishment is on a roll.”

Same old same old. Just like here on FR. If a conservative runs, they endorse the Rino. If a Rino runs, they trash them and pimp the Democrat as inevitable.

Most GOP voters are just not paying attention. The GOPe know if they fake it most won’t even notice. And what are we to do about it? Vote Democrat? That’s what they are daring us to do. The donor class fueled GOPe has no interest in governing in a conservative America First manner. They will continue to be pulled to the left by the increasingly radical Democrat party.

For a first outing, Sethi did pretty well. I hope he goes for some other office, perhaps at the state or local level. And if a Congressional seat should open up ...

Not being familiar with the race, at first I was thinking Dan Haggerty. And he’s no longer around, I think.

If NC Republicans want to retain the seat, we have to vote for Tillis. I don’t think washing with alcohol and bleach is enough for cleaning up and removing the stench.

Sethi lives in Nashville. The 5th House district is unwinnable for a Republican. Not since 1872 (EIGHTEEN Seventy-Two) has a Republican won, and that only because two Democrats split the vote in the general election.

He could run in an adjacent district, but it would be seen as carpetbagging. The only other race would be Governor, where we presently have yet another RINO turd from Nashville sitting in the office. He’s up for reelection in 2 years.
