Smoking or vaping cannabis could cause strokes, heart attacks

The American Heart Association is warning that marijuana use shows “substantial risks” and “no benefit” in cardiovascular health, and its deputy chief science and medical officer is recommending that people “not smoke or vape any substance, including cannabis products, because of the potential harm to the heart, lungs and blood vessels.”

Marijuana contains the psychoactive chemical THC (which gives users the “high”), as well as more than 100 compounds (cannabinoids, such as the popular cannabidiol, or CBD ) chemically related to THC that are still not entirely understood. Studies suggest that they inhibit some enzymes in the body that can affect the way we metabolize certain heart disease medications, such as cholesterol-lowering statins and blood-thinning warfarin, which skews what’s considered a safe dosage.

So in a scientific paper published Wednesday, the American Heart Association (AHA) cites a growing crop of observational studies suggesting that cannabis use is linked to an increased risk of heart attacks, irregular heartbeats (atrial fibrillation, or AFib) and heart failure; a nearly 2.5 times higher risk of strokes; chest pain or angina; and high blood pressure.

Some 2 million Americans with heart disease currently use marijuana or have used it in the past, according to a recent report in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, which notes that more than 39 million U.S. adults have used the drug in the past year.

I agree; pot is not harmless, which is why I never touch the stuff, even after it became legal in my state. Smoking anything, be it pot or tobacco or crack, is not good for your lungs. Heck, I’ve even given up booze to keep my immune system strong during the time of COVID.

Sounds like me 5 years ago, and I have never smoked, eaten nor rubbed on any pot. I had developed a fib and the cardio put me on baby aspirin twice a day and 25 mg of Atenolol hs.

Everything calmed down. My wife and RN was a cardio ICU nurse and reads ekgs better most docs and is better with a stethoscope than most. So she monitored me about twice a week.

Then, we switched over to the big HMO and they did all of the cardio electronic wizard stuff and added Eliquis bid and eliminated the Aspirin.

Flash forward, a year plus, and we were giving our fp a Christmas gift. He looked at me as asked how I was feeling and I told him about a chest pressure not pain like a fist pushing against my chest over my heart.

Before I left the building, I had EKG’s, blood tests and other tests. He made an appt with one of their great Cardio docs. That was on a Friday, and I saw the cardio the next Monday, and those tests looked the same as last year.

Making a long process short, I ended up about a week later in their Cardiac stent lab and received one stent.

A year and a half later I feel better everyday. I’m still on the Eliquis bid, the Atenolol hs and a baby aspirin hs. Everything seems good for a guy about 82.

When this was wrapped up, I/we asked our FP why he acted so quickly and maybe saved my life. He said my skin color was not good, my pulse rate was fast and the remark about elephant’s foot on my chest was the best clue.

He added, that he knows my wife and I socially and knew there was no pot or illegal drug use in our home. We thought that it was strange to comment that he knew I didn’t use pot.

Now, we know why!

Oh yeah - those observational studies are so hot right now.

Gimme a break. Sluglords on parade.

Drinking booze is FAR more harmful to the body, mind and soul. I’m for legalization of marijuana. 100 years of a drug hasn’t done a damn thing except make weed more available.
There isn’t any food or drug or medication you put it your body that isn’t going to have some negative effect. I’m just so sick of this double standard-booze good, pot bad.

Oh for Christ sake. So how about we bring back alcohol prohibition? That was a success, wasn't it?

“If lawyers and health insurance companies jump on this, then bye bye legal Mary Jane.”

Just like cirrhosis and other health harms of alcohol have led to the illegality of that drug.

Oh, wait ...

You can google, there are many many articles. Marijuana is much worse than tobacco.

Fact is dope addicts are going to deny over and over again there’s anything wrong with this poison, even as it’s killing them.

Because having one intoxicant that ruins untold lives isn’t enough. We demand another one. Yeah that is a great argument.

Or you can bray baseless nonsense like a jackass.

“having one intoxicant that ruins untold lives isn’t enough”

By that logic, shouldn’t we have one less and ban alcohol? Do you support that goal?

What a ludicrous assumption you make. Not everyone who drinks, smokes marijuana or places a bet on a horse develops a problem. Did that ever occur to you or you a modern day Carrie Nation?

After perusing the comments on this article, I have noticed an interesting correlation: many of the commenters who cry about “dopeheads” and how marijuana causes every major organ to malfunction are also the same ones who demand we all wear masks because COVID is going to kill us all.

If I had to make a guess, I think we’re dealing with a cadre of individuals who feel all too keenly the Grim Reaper’s breath on the back of their necks due to their advanced decrepitude.

I’m for legalization, and I cannot think of one thing that is smoked that is good for the lungs. Smoke from any source is not good for the lungs or heart. Other than a good pork butt or venison loin. Mmmmm….

Daisy Moses: "I'm goin' down to the lake to smoke some crawdads."

police officer: "Some what?"

Daisy Moses: "Crawdads. But first I'll need a little pot."
