A series of videos captured the devastation in Beirut as an explosion tore through the Lebanese capital - killing at least 100 people dead and injuring more than 4,000.
Footage from across the blast site filmed the apocalyptic scenes yesterday which saw ceilings collapse, families shelter for cover, offices ripped apart and buildings engulfed in flames.
It is thought the explosion was triggered by more than 2,750 tons of highly explosive ammonium nitrate - the main ingredient in fertilizer bombs.

The real crime is why did the port authorities allow a fireworks to be stored right next door. Thats really dumb, yes?
The last time Lebanon had a competent government was when it was French controlled. It went all downhill when the place was flooded with Palestinians.
It killed them dead?
That’s the worst way to kill them
hmmm, this will be similar to damascus’ end... only bigger...
soon. soon.
Insha Allah
In Jordon it registered as a 4.5 earthquake.
I am not buying this ‘fireworks storage’ baloney
What are the odds they were assembling a fertilizer bomb meant for Israel and it went kablooey?
The main grain storage facility was destroyed:
Dumb?
Yes but..... I suspect that the confiscation of international cargo involves in extremely complex legal matters involving perhaps several nations, corporations, ship lines and insurance companies. The fertilizer had to be stored while the legal wrangling was in process.
The legal wrangling now shifts to who was the owner and was it responsible for the explosion by being the actual owner.
This 2-ton anchor was thrown more than 1.6 miles when the Grandcamp exploded. (Texas City 1947 disaster - about 2300 tons of amm nit.)
So lebanese authorities state that the explosives were confinscated from a ship in that port...if a nation, any nation wanted to bomb Beruit on the sly, send in a ship laden with explosives, let it be confiscated. Then, recruit a suicide bomber to touch that baby off, terrorist problem solved.
Don’t forget, the locust plague is still moving in that part of the world and it has wiped out much of the grain so there are many nations on the continent that have little to no reserve.
Devastating explosion.
If news reports are correct, Lebanese authorities have been trying to get some action on disposal of this ammonium nitrate for six years and the bureaucracy response has been nil. I suspect the fireworks facility was there first.
Possibly. The suicide bomber would almost certainly be muslim and the area destroyed is largely Maronite Christian. So casualties are not a consideration. Sort of a “Muslim Lives Matter” approach.
Understood. I guess what I’m saying is that since they were holding the ammonium nitrate pending resolution of the court actions, the port authorities should have prevented flammable items being stored adjacent.
I imagine the Beirut fire department knew the 2,750 tons were there and pointed this out to the mayor or whoever but were ignored?
It looks like they weren’t there when explosion occurred.
Not only that....but did you notice that there was a condo or apartment building right next to the place that exploded. Needless to say it was totally destroyed!!!!
I don’t know for sure, but I bet there is a law keeping developers from building a 15 story condo touching the walls of the building that blew up! A building that was zoned to store combustibles! Those people did not have a chance!!!!
I think that was the grain elevators somebody mentioned up thread.
When I first saw the video at a distance, I thought it was a hotel.
