I want to cancel Fast Times for its abortion storyline. But I want to uncancel it for Moving in Stereo. Im conflicted. Oh, Lois is cool with abortion but resents the male gaze? I think were going with canceling it.
Truthfully, I thought the abortion subplot was done very honestly. Of course I wish Stacy chose life, but it wasn't like the character saw abortion as a panacea. Indeed, she was pretty depressed afterwards, when Brad surprised her and drove her back. If anything, I viewed the abortion as a turning point in Stacy's life (she certainly didn't become a tramp like Linda) and a mildly pivotal moment for Damone. All-in-all, I doubt any kid saw Fast Times and came away with a war, and fuzzy feeling about abortion.
While were at it, why aren't the Wokey folks all busted up over the Phoebe Cates' legendary nude scene or Jennifer Jason Leigh's nudity? I guess objectification of women is lower on the woke pecking order than racism, though Spicoli did get away with trashing Jefferson's car.
