Vindman was never going to be selected to command a battalion. He was wearing crossed rifles, but he had become a single track Foreign Area Officer (FAO). FAO’s like other specialty officers that are needed by the Army have chances to go to the War College and to be selected for promotion to Colonel. A very few can even become Brigadier General, they become Defense Attaches or key positions in DoD or DOS.
You are right, he was a political staff wennie, but now he’ll be a liberal hero in their part of the Swamp. If Biden wins, his new career will soar. Biden will need a loyal lackey who can speak Ukrainian. The problem with your scenario is that if Vindman would incur an additional service obligation. His chance to cash in would be defferred or dead ended. Retiring was always his plan.
