Locals scramble to higher ground as world's largest dam faces mounting pressure

People in cities along China's Yangtze River, already swamped with water, are now scrambling to shore up embankments as the world's largest dam faces fast mounting flood pressure...

The Three Gorges Dam spans the Yangtze, Asia's longest river, which has become a raging torrent with storm water pouring into the reservoir of the dam at 60 million litres per second on Monday night.

On Tuesday morning, dam operator the China Three Gorges Group said water flow into the reservoir fluctuated between 50 million and 60 million litres per second.

And the peak flow has not eased, adding more than ten trillion litres to the mega-dam in just 10 days.

All arteries leading from the Yangtze River remain deluged by the third big flood this summer.

The China Three Gorges Group say they plan to hold as much water in the dam as possible to buy time for cities downstream to build up their defences.

According to local reports, the dam's operator has indicated there are 13 days left before the reservoir will fill to the brim.

“mt mom used to say at dinner, eat your food, there are 100 million starving chinamen. Some things repeat them selves”.

My Mom said the same thing and once I responded with “You can mail my peas to them”.

I can appreciate your scenario and see it as possible but unless I’m missing something, they would still have a food crisis.

They may still have a food crisis, but I'd expect the nuke would diminish the population somewhat, and also would turn the anger towards their "external enemy" as opposed to the CCP. Whether the CCP would do this, can best be determined by asking would the DNC do this to American citizens if they were in a similar situation?

Yes, if they could do so, the DNC would be just as ruthless.

In fact, when they have the power, the dems/Deep State are going to go after us with no mercy.

“2.1 million cfs is the incoming flow. I’d be interested to know how fast they’re letting it out.”

One article that I saw, mentioned that last weekend (peak of the third flood), the dam held back about 36% of the new flood, and allowed the rest to pass. They have only bad choices, with this much rain. They knew those releases last weekend would flood a lot of folks downstream, but they also know they have a few more weeks of monsoon to get through.

“Lot of nuclear power plants down stream.”

One article I saw, said that over 60 nuclear plants might be hit by a worst case dam failure.

That would be a lot more electrical generation to make up - but then again, they would lose a lot of local demand along with it, if it was the worst case.

Thanks for the clarification. Looks to me that outflow has to be very close to inflow given the level of the water. There isn’t much storage capacity left.

Agreed. Good summary. No one listens to cycles.

“13 days” (till the reservoir fills to the brim)

Its in God’s hands.

Some commie functionary mentioned 13 days, but he can’t know how much rain will fall.

Nevertheless, it might be a well-informed opinion.

It is the highest risk ever.

Big changes are coming for the US just from this COVID crisis. I read today that 60% of the restaurants that have closed, will never re-open and will file bankruptcy. So perhaps the jobs we’ll have in this country again will only be manufacturing jobs.

Imagine you’re a recent “undocumented” worker who just arrived in the US, and you find out that all the jobs disappeared when you arrived. Gonna be some pi$$ed off, and mad about it, hombres.

Maybe they go home?

“Doesn’t this dam generate power for most of central China?”

According to Forbes:The Three Gorges Dam is the world’s largest hydroelectric power station, with an installed capacity of 22,500 megawatts of power generation.

China has enough cash to buy on the world’s markets. The result would be a dramatic uptick in prices. A collapse of the Three Gorges Dam would also set back the Chinese economy and endanger the regime. The result would be to make China vulnerable to external pressure.

Better stock up on food, FReepers. Because if this dam blows, food prices are going to skyrocket.

I am not sure it matters all that much if the dam blows. Already there is a lot of flooding in their agricultural regions. Food shortages in China are baked in at this point, and higher prices all over the world.

“Are the recent storms significantly out of the ordinary?”

Forbes reports: “It was reported to be the worst flood since 1998, and not 100 years as some in Beijing have said.

All told, more than 400 Yangtze tributary rivers have overflowed, with nearly 200 people dead and properties underwater.

Average rainfall is around 12% higher than last monsoon season.”

They also state: “The thing is, that the (Three Gorges Dam) power station is down the Yangtze River from a handful of other dams that exist at a higher elevation than the Three Gorges. And because of the floods and problems at those dams upstream, Three Gorges is buckling under the strain of massive flows of water.”

200 million dam-building beavers once roamed the China northwest creating flood control wetland cornucopias. But starving communists eat all wildlife, and beaver fur makes a nice hat. There are about 600 beavers left.

FYI... an old news snapshot....

“ Oroville Dam Spillway Evacuation orders were delivered to residents surrounding Lake Oroville at approximately 4:30pm on Sunday. DWR has been monitoring conditions at Lake Oroville’s main and auxiliary spillways around the clock for signs of erosion that could threaten the integrity of the emergency spillway and allow large, uncontrolled flows to the Feather River. To lower the lake level and thus reduce flows and the potential for erosion at the top of the emergency spillway, DWR increased flows down the main spillway’s damaged, concrete chute to 100,000 cubic feet per second. Current releases remain within the capacity of downstream channels. Oroville Dam is a separate structure from the emergency spillway and remains sound.”

” Let’s imagine that the Dam is going to blow, and take out 500 million people. “

Then those people no longer need to be fed.

Interesting scenario. But I expect more of a WW1 Bosnia tipping point. Something less engineered. History has a way of doing that.

I have no idea about the Hoover dam’s safety factor design but during the days when the slide rule errr ruled, greater safety margins were common relative to what are common today.

I understand that Hoover Adam is actually stronger now than when it was built. Temperature sensors were embedded in the concrete and some still show elevated temperatures produced by chemical reaction as green concrete cures to mature concrete.
