Sadly, “gay” was a word, like “niggardly” which does not have a direct replacement.
“Gay” meant more than just happy. It meant a happy outlook on life, or even happy-go-lucky. “He is a gay fellow/gal” or “s/he leads a gay life” meant the guy/gal had a positive outlook on life and was fun to be around.
When the term was lost to leftist appropriation, the English language was permanently marred as there is no substitute.
The same holds true for “niggardly.” It does not simply means miserly, it usually is used with apportioning and describes paucity in portioning and implies the provider is miserly.
Again, the English language and culture are robbed of the ability to provide meaning.
