If you have no proof of where you got huge amounts of cash legally when they find it in your carry-on then its your problem, probably drug or tax evasion $$$. I thought that we were Americans living under US constitution law, innocent until proven guilty.
I had no idea we were french living under Napoleonic law, guilty until proven innocent.

RE:”
Under what logical aspect of reasonable does someone have to think a crime was committed when one person has $10,001 dollars in their pocket instead of $10,000? This is an absolute perversion of any sense.” $10,000 in your pocket : HAHAHA! Pocket LOLOLO
So many unrelated hypotheticals in comments on this thread.

I always carry enough cash to buy a motorcycle that has a really good price. Private sellers don’t take checks. Even checks that appear to be from a bank are easily faked. I have a few prized examples sent to me by ebay and Craigslist scammers. Fake bank checks, fake postal money orders and fake Walmart money orders are common.

Thats idiotic.
Protesters were found to have done something illegal, then were arrested. Heck, most protesters werent arrested who should have been from their witnessed crimes.
You also make it sound like a rational argument cant be levied by a Freeper if any prior actual criminal ever used it in self-defenseeven if proper by all laws and our Constitution.
You are a sick $:$@.

You are wrong. No one has to explain why they have $10,000.
They only have to explain why they have $10,001 or above.
Get your head out. Your arguments are senseless.

It's called probable cause.
If you have no proof of where you got huge amounts of cash legally when they find it in your carry-on then its your problem, probably drug or tax evasion $$$.
How is that probable cause? Many people don't trust banks, or as others have mentioned, are going to buy a vehicle, have some gambling winnings, legit business transactions, or something. Simply having a "large" amount of cash is not in and of itself suspicious. And "suspicion" or "hunches" are not a legal basis to support "probable cause".
And what defines suspicious? Some poor looking guy on a cheap Spirit flight carrying $9500 isn't, But a well-groomed guy in an expensive suit sitting in AA's executive lounge, carrying $10,001 is suspicious? Does it count as suspicious if he's got $9900 in a paper sack, but forgot the $250 from his wallet?
I'm not sure when the flight reporting requirement was instituted, but the bank transaction report requirement is part of the Banking Secrecy Act, from 1970. Inflation is about 6.8x since then, so $10M in 1970 dollars is equivalent to about $68M today. Shouldn't we make that the new "suspicious" limit?

Even driving youre not safe, especially going over the border.
Had one new customs agent, who was clearly trying to go by the book, ask mr. mm and me if we were carrying more that $1,000 in cash. We werent but I would have lied anyways.
Besides, is that per person, ON me, in the car, total altogether?
So, no, I would not carry more than a grand ON me at any one moment.
