here’s my take on it
Racism definitely is one of the root causes of today’s African-American problems.
Note I said “African-American” - as in not recent immigrants from Africa or the Caribbean - they have a different culture and different problems.
The root cause of today’s African-American problems in my opinion are:
1. Culture - a culture that glorifies distinction from “whites” and incorrectly assumes education, erudition, learning etc as “acting white”
2. Single-mother families -> only 13% of blacks live in two-parent households. This instantly puts them at a disadvantage.
3. Poverty - cause by #1 and #2
4. Lower expectations - caused by #1 and #2
5. Black on black hate and crime - caused by 1,2,3 and 4
6. Causal racism - caused partially by all of the above and secondarily by non-blacks reaction to blacks acting out as above leading to prejudice (even if you are without prejudice, after some incidents you get wary at the very least) AND real racist idiots.
7. Legacy racism - due to the past, some people may look down on African-Americans and it gets worse if their initial prejudices get “justified” by the above points.
to solve the “black” problem is to stop calling it a “black problem” but a societal problem - blacks are not a separate “other” but just as American as anyone else
