Cruz is 100% pro Trump here, and knows his re-election is critical for the country.
Republicans are frustrated Trump steps on his message constantly. Its stupid to publicly troll Fauci because it loses votes by playing into the Democrat narrative that the coronavirus response was chaotic.
The buried lede here is the Cruz said dems had plans to get rid of the filibuster, admit Washington DC and Puerto Rico as states, and pack the supreme court. Basically a coup taking over two of the three branches of the government.

You are right, of course. The sad thing is that there’s so many people on Free Republic who absolutely hate Ted Cruz, and look for every reason to come out and damn him. Apparently it is no longer possible to have any negative critique about our current president, who is perhaps the best president we’ve had in my lifetime.
