Did the Three Gorges Dam really deform, or was that just a bad photo?
I believe it did... that can’t be good
The article States above the image that it the image was taken with a fisheye lens.
I talked to a friend with the USACE. He says their dam monitoring group does not think it’s in danger of failing.
Unsure.
“Did the Three Gorges Dam really deform, or was that just a bad photo?”
Both. There was some movement that was officially reported - but grossly distorted pictures have been spread around.
There are still big risks ahead. How much more rain? That’s a big wild card.
Another factor could be failures cascading - a dam failure upstream, blowing another downstream, and combining the water volume of two reservoirs to hit the next, and so on. There is not much slack left in the system.
It says a fisheye lens was used. That is the normal distortion you get with a fisheye.
Some of each. It has deformed- and had some movement, But! there are some photos around that are just naturally distorted from satellites.
I don’t think anyone knows what’s going to happen. Wait and watch.
The “media” won’t cover it unless there’s a catastrophe. I’ve been watching online- reliable info is hard to come by.
I’m convinced the distortion of the three gorges dam was propaganda.
The dam seems to be holding the flood bach as is possible. The various videos show varying number of open flood gates at different times. That would mean that they have a handle on the inflow and open the gates to prevent the lake level from rising above their designated levels.
There is a lot of criticism about quality but that seems mainly concerned with the quality of the sheathing rather than the bulk of the dam proper. There is also talk about the weight of the water on the rock riverbed. The rock is said to be crumbly and failures beneath is possible.
We’ll see.
