Trammell, 60, was gunned down on July 23 near the very spot where he gave a video interview a few hours before explaining why he supported Trump. Milwaukee police are seeking what they described as “unknown suspects.” The motive is not clear, including whether the slaying was tied into Trammell’s political beliefs or Trump support. Some news outlets gave the victim’s name as Bernell Tremmell, but he goes by Trammell on social media.
Kevan Penvose wrote on Facebook that Trammell “was a man with whom I hardly ever agreed about anything he wrote on his signs, but also, as a Rasta street preacher, he was one of the people that make my neighborhood so uniquely wonderful. Around 12:30 this afternoon I heard gunshots nearby as I was working at my dining room table. Soon after, I was reading reports on social media of a shooting around the block, at the location of this one-of-a-kind storefront that I’ve walked by a million times… Peace and light, Ras Bernell.”
Armstrong Ramsone (the pen name of local artist and writer Adebisi Agoro) wrote on the site The God Degree that he recorded video interviews with Trammell just hours before his death. “Earlier today he had mentioned to me ‘you wouldn’t guess the amount of hate I received from Black people,’” he wrote. Agoro became curious about Trammell’s political beliefs after seeing him at a bus stop and decided to ask “about what I saw on Facebook and why he was holding the Trump sign?” Agoro recorded videos of an interview he conducted that day in which Trammell, clutching a pro Trump sign, explains his political beliefs. “I have encouraged Afro-Americans from all walks of life and culture here in Wisconsin and particularly here in Milwaukee to vote Donald Trump for this year. Trump 2020. I believe Trump is the sign of the times,” Trammell says in one of the videos, recorded outside his publishing business near the very spot where he would be shot a few hours later...
Johnny Schaeffer, 45, knew Trammell for almost his entire life because his mother once dated him, and they stayed in touch over the years. “I’m devastated,” he told Heavy in a phone interview...
As for his Trump support, Schaeffer added: “Yeah his Donald Trump beliefs. He was (a a Trump supporter). He kind of expressed it in a way of he knows what Trump is doing for all colors. Bernell was that type. He took the overall thought of it.”...

Updated 24 Jul: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: ‘He’s like a Milwaukee character’: Bernell Trammell, 60, was shot and killed on Thursday afternoon outside his office in Riverwest

Reggie Moore, director of Milwaukee’s Office of Violence Prevention, said he recently intervened in a dispute between Trammell and a young man. Moore thought the incident was related to a Trump sign that Trammell was carrying.
“He’s a Black elder who didn’t deserve to die the way that he did,” Moore said.
He added that the way Trammell was killed, “in front of his home and in front of his shop in broad daylight, is extremely troubling.”
Andrew Hitt, chairman of the Republican Party of Wisconsin, called for federal prosecutors to investigate the “senseless” killing of Trammell.
“Because of Trammell’s well known political activism and the possibility that his murder could be politically motivated, I respectfully request that United States Attorney Matthew Krueger open an investigation into this heinous crime,” Hitt said in a statement issued late Friday. “No American should fear for their personal safety because of where they live or their political affiliation.”
Police have not said whether the killing was politically motivated.
Community members have created a memorial with candles, plants and chalk art outside the eXpressions Journal office, 915 E. Wright St. A memorial service is set for next 5:30 p.m. July 31 outside the office.
On Friday evening, Trammell’s friends stood around outside the building sharing stories about his life. They remembered him as a teacher and a friend who always helped people in need.
“He was selfless,” said Wisdom Prometheus Grey, an artist and a longtime friend of Trammell’s.
A 21-year-old woman named Janette, who asked that her last name not be used, said Trammell supported her after she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
The two would walk together, talking about religion and philosophy. Those walks, Janette said, helped her develop strength and balance despite her medical condition.
Trammell also encouraged Janette to speak out about her beliefs — a practice he dedicated his own life to.
“Now that he’s not here, I have no choice but to use my voice,” she said...
