The infectious disease specialist says he was dehydrated
-------
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci said Friday that criticism of a photo in which he had his face mask partially down is "sort of mischievous."
In an interview on "America's Newsroom," Fauci told host John Roberts that he had been sitting next to his wife, Dr. Christine Grady, and a very close friend of his.
"I had my mask around my chin. I had taken it down. I was totally dehydrated and I was drinking water trying to rehydrate myself," he explained. "And, by the way, I was negative COVID literally the day before."
"So, I guess people want to make it a big event. I wear a mask all the time when I'm outside. To pull it down to take some sips of water and put it back up again -- I guess if people want to make something about that they can," he said. "But to me, I think that's just mischievous, John."
Critics took to Twitter to attack Fauci for the photo.
New York Magazine and Huffington Post contributing writer Yashar Ali reprimanded the doctor.
"Dr. Fauci should be setting a better example," he tweeted. Ali has over 662,000 followers on the social media platform.
The photo was taken by The Associated Press's Alex Brandon at Nationals Park.

“He didnt have to be there.”
You’re right. Forget about the mask, either we’re in there worst pandemic in a hundred years and everyone should avoid non essential activities, or we’re not. This stunt coupled with the Instyle Magazine photo shoot reeks of “let them eat cake.”
I mean if he’s the most brilliant scientist in American history working and slaving to save us all from disease, he needs to be back in his office doing THAT, right? Not all this tabloid celebrity stuff. It’s unseemly and undignified. A serious scientist would not be doing it.
Fauci is just giving us a preview of life under a Biden Administration: Theyll never subject themselves to rules they impose on the little people. pic.twitter.com/DaP5qtfTkp— Laura Ingraham (@IngrahamAngle) July 24, 2020
That doesn't mean anything dumbass. Was it a false negative? That was YESTERDAY!. Play by the rules you created jackass!
exactly!!! tested the day before or the hour before is meaningless.
I think he’s completely tone deaf with no sense of self awareness. I’m not big on age discrimination, in fact I think I’ve experienced that myself, but he’s WAAY too old to be in the position he’s in. He’s clearly coasting by the office water cooler until the press call on him, then he’s ready for his closeup.
Words cannot express the contempt I have for this man.
Dr. Fauci: Masks are for show and optics and to make people feel better
There really is no reason to wear a mask
It may stop a droplet but its not really providing any real protection
Back in the day i worked at a Union represented auto parts plant.
I was walking from my office to the Shipping office.
I saw a guy sleeping with his legs in the path where forklifts operate.
Upon my return, dude was still sleeping.
Reported incident to the Foreman.
Foreman replied, Steven, you do not understand. His Union Rep will claim he was awake all along, he nodded off when you saw him cause he was working so hard
Are Mr. and Mrs. Fauci drinking from the same bottle?
I am very interested in seeing the President toss out the first pitch at the NYY Stadium opener. He is an outstanding ball player and was scouted by the both the Phillies and the Red Sox.
Kayleigh McEnany got a nasty question today from some presstitute asking Trump why he’s doing the first pitch
when he said he would not be watching if they knelt.
Why would he have to be watching them take a knee?
Hey Dr. Fauci, should we cover our nose with the mask... or only the mouth. #HowToUseMask

She’s exposing the inner sanctum of her mask to the open air where particles are likely to stick to the moistened surface.
Better off to throw those particle magnets away and don new ones when you put back on the mask.
I guess he said he would not be watching baseball if they took a knee and just about every team did.
Is that a pharmacist from Walgreens sitting next to him?
I think Im gonna save that photo to my phone in case somebody like a store manager wants me to wear my mask over my nose.
