New York Times to Release ‘Nice White Parents’ Series Blaming White Parents for Achievement Gap [2nd post]

The New York Times announced Thursday it is releasing a new podcast series titled Nice White Parents, about how white parents are preventing black and brown children from succeeding in public schools.

According to the Times, Nice White Parents is “about the 60-year relationship between white parents and the public school down the block.”

Its premise is reportedly that the reason government schools are failing “black and brown kids” is due to powerful “white parents.”

Reporter Chana Joffe-Walt states in an audio clip the basis for the project is research that led her back to New York City in 1963, when optimistic white parents insisted that a new school, intended originally for black and Hispanic children who lived in “the projects,” be built near their neighborhood instead, so that their white children and the minority children could attend school together.

When the school was finally built, however, Joffe-Walt reported the white parents never actually sent their children to the school. In the series, she relates some of the conversations she had with some of the white parents to examine why they failed to follow through with their stated intentions.

The Times report says the new podcast series demonstrates that questions about why there is an achievement gap between children from black and Hispanic families and white and Asian families – despite 20 years of progressive reforms in public schools – need to be revisited:

We know that American public schools do not guarantee each child an equal education — two decades of school reform initiatives have not changed that. But when we look at how our schools are failing, we usually focus on who they’re failing: Black and brown kids. We ask: Why aren’t they performing better? Why aren’t they achieving more?

How do they explain the superior performance of asian kids? It’s not like Vietnamese boat people came over here with their pockets full of gold.

They are even NICER than the white parents.

The example of the asian kids general superiority in school is why they never bring it up. It totally destroys their narrative.

White and asian parents (plural), generally, insisting (demanding) that their kids not just get through, but excel in school will almost always lead to above average academic success....which in turn generally leads to more opportunities, a better job, a better paycheck and so on.

Now, this is NOT to says that other groups of people don't bear this out....but by far a higher percentage of their respective populations...whites and asians are generally raised to be good citizens and productive in their communities regardless of economic status.

I see this personally, knowing countless Chinese Americans, Japanese Americans, Korean Americans and Vietnamese Americans in the health care field. And those that are not doctors, nurses or pharmacists are either successful business owners or hard working successful "blue collar" workers who all value education, an intact family structure and faith. Many, granted, are not well versed in American civics, but all to a one are a positive asset to their communities. In other words, they are not net "takers" from the "system."

so the school went back to its intended purpose? and that caused the achievement gap?

This is why compulsory attendance ruined cities. The middle class fled, the upper class sent their kids to private schools, and the poor were stuck.

Want minority kids to do better? Defund the public schools, and send poor kids to private schools that won’t put up with bad behavior and will demand some accountability from parents.
