LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A group of faculty at the University of Kentucky wrote a letter to President Eli Capilouto on Thursday in which they asked for him to take steps that would make "an immediate impact on racial equity."
Among their requests was that Rupp Arena be renamed.
The letter from the faculty in the African-American and Africana Studies (AAAS), a department they called a "campus leader in the recruitment and retention of Black faculty," said the actions they propose "focus on deeper, structural change" beyond what the university has already pledged. Among UK's recent announcements was the removal of a controversial mural inside Memorial Hall.
AAAS asks that the famous men's basketball arena be renamed for the following reasons:
"The Adolph Rupp name has come to stand for racism and exclusion in UK athletics and alienates Black students, fans, and attendees. The rebuilding of the arena and the convention center offer an opportunity to change the name to a far more inclusive one, such as Wildcat Arena.

Strange that no one came up with this until now - including all the black players and coaching staff as well as the man who was the Head Coach for 10 years - Coach Tubby Smith.
Rupp outlawed dunking because he knew his all-white teams wouldn’t be able to compete as the SEC started to integrate.

Meh. It’s not something that would be on my action list, but honestly this is not an absolutely bat-fecal matter- crazy idea like so much that has come out of the left of late. It sounds like the man’s out look no longer represents the university’s values. So whatever.
On a side note I was pleased that Princeton has finally stopped honoring Woodrow Wilson, a man many of us have long recognized as a contender for the title of worst president in US History.

Lemme guess, this Rupp guy is not a Black man.
It was banned more than a year after Rupp’s all white team (Rupp’s Runts) made it to the NCAA Finals and lost but only weeks after the 7’2” Lew Alcindor led UCLA to a championship. It was known as the Alcindor Rule at the time. Rupp didn’t get the dunk banned to help white players. That’s a fantasy just so story.

Require all undergraduates take a course on race and inequality
Increase Black representation among faculty to 15 percent, reflecting the population of Lexington
Appoint more Black faculty and staff to leadership positions
Increase support for Black students
Establish a system of accountability for those who commit racist and other acts of discrimination on campus
Fund the new Commonwealth Institute for Black Studies
Join the Universities Studying Slavery collective and begin a major study of the history of slavery and racism
Minimize the university’ cooperation with Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) and the Lexington Police Department
Rename Rupp Arena

John Muir was a eugenicist. That was as much a pseudo science as Global Warming. Are we going to rip up the legacy of CO2 science when men find out it took mankind to the brink of the stone age? We got to know its history so we don’t make that mistake again.
Every university needs a department of Afrocentrist Studies that propagates fabricated histories and mythologies; and diminishes the role of Western Civilization.

That’s actually the most accurate description I’ve ever heard or read regarding “Afrocentrist Studies”.
Those people in living in a made up dream world. Kind of like what you’re taught about pre-Columbian “Native Americans”. They lived in peace and tranquility with each other and in harmony with nature having sustainable trade and food systems.
