U.S. Senate passes $740 billion defense bill, bucking Trump on Confederate names

The U.S. Senate on Thursday passed its version of the National Defense Authorization Act, a $740 billion bill setting policy for the Pentagon that President Donald Trump has threatened to veto over a provision removing Confederate names from military bases.

The vote was 86-14, one of the few times the Republican-led Senate has broken from the president, and could pave the way for a fight later this year with the White House.

The Senate and Democratic-led House of Representatives each passed versions of the bill, known as the NDAA, with far more than the two-thirds majorities needed to override a veto.

The House bill also voted to include a provision to change the names of military facilities named after generals who fought on the pro-slavery side during the Civil War 155 years ago.

The Senate and Republican versions must got the reconciliation. Many wacky parts from the House version will likely be deleted.

But not the base naming clause. That was in both versions.

This country is going to Hell with the speed of light, and the damned Senators don’t understand that they have become the tool of the Marxist left.

So, on every battlefield of the Civil War, between 1861 and Lees Surrender in April 1865, which side was fighting to end slavery?

Answer: Neither side was fighting to end slavery...because slavery was present and legal in both the North and the South during the entire Civil War

Neither. But the South was definitely fighting to protect slavery.

Oh, the GOP knows. They just don’t care. All they want to be is one inch to the right of the Democrats on the political spectrum. The radical Dems are dragging the GOP to the left with them. The GOP go willingly because they are getting rich off open borders and unfair trade.

Sorry .
China Mitch must go .
He has held up these judges votes with old rules while Harry Reid expedited
The Muslim radical judges and he expanded the DC circuit to include more Commie judges then before .
Mitch is owned by the Globalist elite who want Trump gone or powerless.
China Mitch allowing this vote proves that point .
I have never seen a Majority leader hold a vote in a President election year on a utter
destructive bill that forces his own party President in a position to veto and have his own senators. openly confront him .
Mitch has not been that great on Judges ,
Reid was a mastermind and Mitch is purposely slow waking all Trump appointments and Judges .
Mitch is no mastermind .

“Who were the brave 14?”

It wasn’t actually 14. It was 8 and 6 did not vote.

Voted nay:

Mike Braun (R-IN), Mike Enzi (R-WY), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Mike Lee (R-UT), Fiona Markey (D-MA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Rand Paul (R-KY), Ron Wyden (D-OR).

Did not vote:

Cory Booker (D-NJ), Kamala Harris (D-CA), John Isakson (R-GA), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Liz Warren (D-MA)

Interesting of the eight that voted nay, it was four each in party. Of the six that didn’t vote, only two were not democrats. There are 10 military bases that are named after confederates and none of the nays and only Isakson of the did nots have one.

Those posts include:

Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Fort Gordon, Georgia, Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Lee, Virginia, Fort Pickett, Virginia, Fort Polk. Louisiana, Fort Rucker, Alabama, Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, Camp Beauregard, Louisiana, and Fort Benning, Georgia.

Tom Tillis and Richard Burr from North Carolina, David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler from Georgia, John Cornyn and Ted Cruz from Texas, John Kennedy and Bill Cassidy from Louisiana, Richard Shelby from Alabama, all republican senators from states that have military installations need to fess up about why they voted to take the names away from these noble locations. And it should be done to Trump, face to face with the media in presence. Start calling these people out. They’re taking conservative money, start acting like one or get cut off. This is an election year, let them go out there on their own with no committees as they can’t be trusted.

That’s like saying my family, three of us US Army Veterans, including tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and a Purple Heart - that history could be re-written someday that we soldiers ‘...were definitely fighting to protect abortion...’

Well, if there is a substantial of evidence of your family saying that they were definitely fighting to protect abortion then it's pretty clear they were. There are no end of quotes from Southern leaders of the time saying their cause was motivated by slavery.

Let the final bill pass, then the likely veto, then let's see if there is a veto override in both houses then you can talk about “Good bye Fort Bragg”.
We are still miles from there.
History is not on your side. Only 10% of presidential vetos have ever been overridden by congress.

If the veto isn’t overridden then what? We’re a 100 days from the election. Unlike McConnell, Schumer is fighting for every inch. He can and will make a huge mess here thanks to McConnell opening the door for him on this bill. Guaranteed. This bill is already a disaster. It can only get worse. Guaranteed.

President Trump...Veto it! Republicans should get a spine and avoid goofy, overdone crap like changing military base names. There are more important issues here in this country than that.

GOP who voted to end the names:

Hey, I’m over here. Which camera is on? Here I am. Love me, love me. I kissed your rear end.

But true conservatives at home should be hostile to them and the Dem and Socialists will continue to hate them. Do they think this lame virtue signaling is going to make the enemies say “What a nice little boy. Here is your doggie treat?” NO.

If Trump can’t win this then he should rename the bases using numbers.

Fort Brag can become Base #007
Fort Dix can become Base #1776

Be creative. Like the same way the state of Georgia changed their flag to the original confederate flag design.

There are other ways to skin a Rat.
