Let's see if these masks hold in coughing using vaping. I'm not in the medical field, I've only made a very short video to make a quick point.

All they do is keep a cough from having a straight 10 foot shot.
He did it a few more times in which he held the mask tightly to his face at the l at the top and sides. Water vapor still found its way out.
you are not limiting the space the air travels through like the top and side of the mask. What happens when you put your thumb partially over the opening of a hose reducing the area the water flows through? Believe what you want masks do it work to reduce the spread of disease
I haven't worn a mask unless some store requires it. Otherwise, I choose to go without. My right as a free American.
I agree 100%. It is a palliative measure to assuage the irrational fears of people, fear being stroked by the Left and the Media.
I have to wear a mask in my line of work in Healthcare, but do it primarily to make patients feel better, and if it prevents even one patient out of 10,000 from catching something from me...I gladly do it. Patients don’t come to my hospital to catch illnesses, so this is no problem for me.
They require me to wear it to my car, which I bristle at, but they are my employer, so I do it.
But wearing it outside, walking down a sidewalk, riding a bike...or even jogging? Absolute, abject stupidity.
I doubt that even being directly in front of a person wearing a mask who coughed like that would make the likelihood of transmission decrease to the point of being “OK”.
I am 100% in agreement with your post, because that is my philosophy even though those are not rules of my making (mandating mask wearing)
I have stated nearly your entire post in one form or another. I am not irritated and upset if someone is or isn’t wearing a mask, I believe it should be a choice people can make for themselves.
What I take extreme umbrage with is the mandated use of a mask in public.
I had a dipstick Freeper who was a newbie give me derisive crap about this subject the other day because I unequivocally stated that the mandated wearing of masks is uncalled for, and that it seems to be an exercise of power by tyrants simply because they can exercise it.
As if they mandated that citizens have to put on the mask at five minutes to each hour, and hop around on their hands for five minutes. Almost for their entertainment. Of course, people would roundly ignore, and the tyrants setting the rules would regroup and say “Well, okay. We couldn’t get them to do that. How about if we mandate masks while people are having sex?”
That Freeper didn’t get the point. My point is, if this Chinese virus had a mortality rate of 35-50% like Bubonic Plague, you wouldn’t need to mandate masks or quarantines. Hell, people would be barricading their doors and taping windows. But it isn’t.
I am of the opinion that if Biden were to win the election in November, this stupid frenzy being stoked up would all go away the next day. People would still get sick and die from it in the numbers they are, but...it wouldn’t be the hysteria we see now.
“The authorities then traced the other passengers on the flight and didnt find any that had caught the virus.
If thats true, that would seem very significant.”
That probably would NOT be due to masks. Airports are a problem but airliners have some of the cleanest air anywhere. The cabin air flows from ceiling to floor and is refreshed 3 times a minute use a mixture of air that has been run thru a HEPA filter and outside air heated to 500 degrees and then cooled.
I strongly suspect places like Arizona and Texas should stop putting attention on masks and place far more attention on public buildings using better filtration for their air conditioning. Texas, Arizona and California saw surges in cases as the weather got hot and people started running their AC 24/7. THAT is probably significant.
Heck you wear a mask and you can feel that from day one.
Early on, when this virus was an unknown and we didn’t yet have an idea of just how serious it was...at the request of my anxious wife I used my 3D printer to print a mask that sealed pretty tightly and had a replaceable filter in the front (I used high allergy “1500” furnace filters cut into squares for the filter, and it was fine enough to filter viruses according to 3M.
Honestly...I just wanted to see if I could make them...:) It was the journey.
About the time I got them finished, people were starting to realize that this wasn’t Ebola and we weren’t going to have Ryder trucks full of bodies like the media was pushing and...I never wore mine. (She wore hers once or twice, but I didn’t see the need and just tried mine on.)
On the ones I made, you could put the part that touches the face in boiling water to soften it up a little, then put it on your face and make it conform. I never got to the point of putting a final touch that made them truly airtight, but if you had it firmly on your face, you got almost no blow-by.
Honestly...I just wanted to make it to see if I could...:)
>”you are not limiting the space the air travels through like the top and side of the mask.”<
Not with the fan barrier, but with the other test of a mouth covering, I couldn’t find any position to the top or side in which I could feel air as I do in front when I cough without a mask. Others are welcome to try for themselves. It just takes a minute.

That could have something to do with it. I don’t think that can be implemented in most places, though, or that it would be (because of the expense).
I am surprised myself if nobody got sick on the plane because many persons are seated close to each other and to the side, where much of the leakage from masks would be. Still, from what I’ve seen with my own experiments, I wouldn’t expect the air to shoot out to the side to the degree that it goes forward from an uncovered mouth.
Correct. But we should bear in mind that that's not bad news.
What happens with any virus is that immunity among most people goes up from exposure and antibody production. At the same time, the virus mutates--which is mostly good news. The more virulent strains of the virus are out-competed by the gentler ones, so the virus present in the general population becomes weaker. Why? Natural selection: a nasty strain kills the host so quickly he barely gets a chance infect anyone else before meeting St. Peter himself. But a weaker strain is gentler on the victim, who happily lives to share it with all his friends and colleagues.
So, Faux-y's dire tales are all tommy-rot--conscious lies.
