Swedish health officials said Tuesday that at least another 3,000 deaths from the coronavirus are likely in the country, known for its controversial softer approach to curbing the spread and much higher death toll than its neighbors. The projection comes from one of three potential scenarios presented in a report from the country's Public Health Agency on Tuesday.
In the worst scenario, where COVID-19 was expected to follow a traditional pandemic trajectory, over 4,400 more deaths related to the virus could follow.
That would nearly double the 5,646 deaths, out of 78,166 confirmed cases, that have been recorded since the start of the pandemic.
However, they said a more likely scenario would see clusters of new cases around the country which would then quickly subside.
That is a scenario "we've seen now in different parts of the world, and which seems like something that COVID-19 is creating more than most other diseases," state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell said at a press conference.
In the report the agency noted that this was a possible scenario where "infectivity increases quickly due to people for example socialize more frequently," but would then decrease "when people become aware of the outbreak and follow recommendations on distancing."
The added death toll from this scenario was estimated at nearly 3,250.
Despite the grim projections, the Public Health Agency said there were positive signs of the epidemic slowing down.
"In Sweden, the positive trend with a fairly quick decline in cases continues," Tegnell said, noting that especially serious cases in need of intensive care were down to a handful a day.
In the mildest scenario presented, in which the spread of the virus follows current trends, just over 1,100 additional deaths were expected.
Unlike most European nations, Sweden never imposed a lockdown

Once Cuomo is finished consulting Atlanta, perhaps he could go to Sweden to help their death rates increase.
It’s being compared to New York City. Roughly the same.
That's odd. Sweden had only one death yesterday, and just nine deaths over the last five days.
And Sweden's death curve looks like Italy and NYS, all three I'm guessing have herd immunity.
Sweden is the new Russia

FU CBS "News"!!!
Overall, we may not have reached peak. Certain places have already passed their peaks.
NYC reached their peak in April, with close to 600 deaths/day. Now they’re doing about 10/day. Philadelphia is similar.
Now, the places with large death counts are the southern states, who have lots of “immigrants”.
We should get through our peak by Labor Day. Encourage parties. Free margaritas. Free tacos. So we'll reach herd immunity quicker. Estimated dead around 250,000. Not bad for a country of 330 million.
Or you can look at mortuary figures... No change from years past.
Do what Sweden did and let nature take its course, or interfere, like the US, and prolong the agony. The end result is the same, people are going to die. The governments are merely shifting the numbers around.
