The United States on July 22 said it ordered the Chinese consulate in Houston to close, according to State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus.
The United States will not tolerate the PRCs violations of our sovereignty and intimidation of our people, just as we have not tolerated the PRCs unfair trade practices, theft of American jobs, and other egregious behavior. President Trump insists on fairness and reciprocity in U.S.-China relations, Ortagus said in a statement emailed to The Epoch Times.
We have directed the closure of PRC consulate general Houston, in order to protect American intellectual property and Americans’ private information.
Ortagus did not offer further details, but pointed to a pair of statements from the Vienna Convention which mandate diplomats to respect the laws and regulations of the receiving state and have a duty not to interfere in the internal affairs of that state.
China called the closure an unprecedented escalation and said it would retaliate if the United States did not revoke the order.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the United States gave it three days to close the consulate.
The unilateral closure of Chinas consulate general in Houston within a short period of time is an unprecedented escalation of its recent actions against China, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said.
We urge the U.S. to immediately revoke this erroneous decision. Should it insist on going down this wrong path, China will react with firm countermeasures.
Wang said the consulate is operating normally. He did not respond to questions about reports of documents being burned in the courtyard of the consulate. A video sent to a local news station and posted on social media showed several open fire pits in the courtyard and what appear to be consulate staff.

Because they have a large Chinese population there.

“why do they have a consulate in Houston?”
Houston is one of the most productive areas of the country...lots of stuff worth getting their hands on. Some good medical work too. And lots of Chinese nationals/immigrants, of course.

ChiCom spying is a BIG problem in this country. High time it was dealt with seriously.
In reality though the timing of this is part of Trump’s COVID pivot. He wants to focus anger at them for releasing the virus.

If being a spynest is the criterion then close the many high Chinese population universities, and raid the many tech firms. Secretive and sending intellectual property to China.

He wants to focus anger at them for releasing the virus. He has to fight against the lying traitorous leftist news media. And the Dems.
Dems deliberately stand up for the Chinese (as do wimpy corporation CEOs).
Americans should be ashamed of themselves for supporting Dems---including the anti-Trump suburban women. When any of my colleagues here start to have a feeling of compassion toward the Dems in your midst---remember they are selling out America. Someday they will support euthanasia to get rid of us.
And shutting down water supplies and electricity in winter by remote cyber control their Chinese students here have thoroughly planned out. Small cities have had their water plants shut down then abruptly started up,to test the future plan of causing total breakdown of huge equipment that takes months to build and replace. Just a test.

We (the general population) had better prepare for war with them. If we are lucky, the population there will revolt.
Massive flooding and..yes, drought in China.
A good portion of their annual grain crop is gone.
Consider that the Reds aggressive tactics in the China Sea is being stood up to, as well as their attitude towards Taiwan, it doesnt look good.
Their military involvement with India..
Then, how much are they involved in the riots going on within this country and across the world?
The CCP is the new NAZI regime along with their friends in this country-the democrat party. They used the capitalistic industry to get to this point.
They have prepared for war. Just need the spark.
A nuclear exchange will happen. We may not have to worry about LA, Seattle, San Fran, and the pacific Islands after it all goes down.
We will be fighting them as well as some/most of the Islamic nations.
Will Russia stand down?

Normally, you do not arrest spies once you know who they are. It’s much more valuable to track them. Therefore, there is something else in play here.

why do they have a consulate in Houston? Not only do they have one, Houston was supposedly the first Chinese consulate to open in the US when we established diplomatic relations.
There's quite possibly some symbolism in our closing it down.

Well the reality is that 🇨🇳 China declared war on the 🇺🇸 USA the day they sent out the "Wuhan Red Virus Of Death", late last year. Thank-you Chris Plante for the idea of "The Wuhan Red Death".

1Old Pro :"WOW, I should assume then that they have hundreds of consulate spy centers across the country, terrible."
Spy centers - isn't that what you call Chinese restaurants ?
I am highly suspect of Chinese restaurants with 'eat-in' accommodations which are located near technological centers,
where engineers and medical research personnel meet for lunch, and casual conversations occur.
China businesses on the mainland are all State owned .
Why would anyone believe that Chinese businesses here in the US would be any different ?
I differentiate between Chinese nationals vs. Chinese -American owned businesses,
especially when so many nationals frequently travel between the two countries.
Round-trip flights between the US and china have to be pretty expensive; that's a lot of Won-tons and General Tso !
Call me paranoid,.. but it doesn't mean that they aren't out to get you, or your technology.
