‘Very frightening’: Opposition grows to US agents in cities

PORTLAND -- The Trump administration is facing growing pushback - in the courts and on the streets - to sending federal agents to Portland, Oregon, where protests have spiraled into violence, and vowing to do the same in other Democratic-led cities.

Far from tamping down the unrest that followed George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police, the presence of federal agents on the streets of progressive Portland - and particularly allegations they have whisked people away in unmarked cars without probable cause - has energized two months of nightly protests that had begun to devolve into smaller, chaotic crowds.

“It is time for the Trump troops to go home and focus their attention on other activities,” Democratic Gov. Kate Brown said on MSNBC.

Federal authorities, however, said state and local officials had been unwilling to work with them to stop the vandalism and violence against federal officers and the U.S. courthouse in Portland.

Crowds had recently numbered fewer than 100 people but swelled to more than 1,000 over the weekend, again attracting a broader base in a city that’s increasingly unified and outraged.

Among the protesters was Mardy Widman, who watched demonstrations against racial injustice unfold in her hometown for weeks but stayed away because, at 79, she feared getting the coronavirus.

When Trump sent in federal officers, that changed: A masked Widman took to the street Monday with other Portland residents.

“It’s like a dictatorship,” Widman, a grandmother of five, said, holding a sign that read: “Grammy says: Please feds, leave Portland.”

“I mean, that he can pick on our city mostly because of the way we vote and make an example of it for his base is very frightening,” she said.

I wonder what the AP had to say about Sherman’s march through the south. Ran across one of these a holes at a funeral for a black friend. He could not contain himself from making a race issue eulogy. I am sure my deceased buddy would have blanched (pun) at those comments. These guys have a one track mindset formed by attendance at left wing urnolism schools and cannot get outside that box for any reason.

If they go outside those nurturing urban centers, they are in big trouble.

A fella so appropriately wrote an article a month or so ago saying just that..."in the city you're the roaring lion, but in the rural areas, you WILL be the gazelle."

Shut up, Grammy. Go back to your knitting.

And I do NOT believe things were calming down but the feds stoked the flames. That is a lie.

"T Cruz is introducing a bill allowing citizens to sue elected officials who allowed their cities to be ravaged"

Better still, Ted, you need to pressure the bagpipe blowhard to arrest and charge these Demonicrat governors and mayors with giving aid and comfort to the enemy by allowing these terrorists enemies to ravage their cities.

Most of Portland citizens vehemently oppose the federal agents and back the protesters. At least that is the impression I get from reading comments.

Perfect. I say cut those communities for bait. Let them succeed or fail on their own... it’s what they are demanding, right?

Yup. The physics of warfare is a b!tch. Including the fact that as you spread out, your forces lose concentration.

What comments? The cherry-picked ones in news articles? The manufactured opinions on Facebook? You need to smarten up a bit.

Besides, it doesn't matter what they think. Federal building are under federal jurisdiction and belong to ALL of the people in the US, not just the cowards in Portland. And we elected Trump to protect those federal buildings... by any means necessary (slogans can go both ways)...

Certainly true and I 100% agree with it. I am just pointing out that Trump is losing the PR battle over this, so I am not sure it will translate into a net plus, even if the courthouse is secured. We need to keep in mind that the ultimate aim is to win the election, not to win the fight against the vandals around the courthouse.

The Nazis at AP are cheering on the Hitler-Jugend. We need to set up an American-style Nuremberg court and charge the Nazi press with crimes against the Constitution and American people.

Regardless of the majority opinion in Portland, we simply can’t allow anarchists to run amok and burn down Federal Court Houses and Police Stations...

Aaaaargh.

They are not “agents”.

They are Federal Protective Services employees protecting federal stuff, employees, and customers/clients.

This is what they are there for and God bless them for doing it.

Or anybody else that bothers to think. Really the idea of guys in full combat gear with NO agency marking, NO names, and NO ability to be held accountable just grabbing people off the streets should bother YOU. Don’t because you like the President doesn’t mean this isn’t TERRIBLE. At some point there WILL be a President you don’t like. If we accept this now that sets a precedent for then. This is a very bad thing. Full on anti-American fascist BAD.

Trump never should have sent troops to being with. All he had to do was sit back, watch the carnage in these cities and say this is what democrats want and made Biden choose which side he was on. Instead he played their game by getting involved. President needs new advisors ASAP
