Trader Joes is being urged to follow the example of other national food companies and rebrand products that critics say perpetuate racial stereotypes.
An online petition is asking the company to remove racist branding and packaging from its stores, including international food items carrying the names Trader Mings, Trader José and Trader Giottos. Those products and others reflect a narrative of exoticism that perpetuates harmful stereotypes, according to the petition, which on Sunday had been signed by more than 1,500 people.
Theyre racist because they exoticize other cultures, present Joe as this default normal, and then the other characters such as Thai Joe, Trader José, Trader Joe San falling outside of it, said Briones Bedell, 17, who started the petition.
A Trader Joes spokeswoman said in a statement that the company had previously decided to get rid of the names and to rebrand its international foods with the Trader Joes name.

They already have
They are owned by Aldi so caving is to be expected. I’m hoping they don’t change product selection and retention policies that made them so successful. Bottom 15% in sales gets cut even if mgt like it. Entire purchasing Committee has to agree based in their taste test to stock.
I regularly buy their pizza they are the best frozen pizzas anywhere. Their frozen Indian meals are outstanding. Especially like the Chaat Aloo hot pockets. The Shashuka starter kit is excellent if cutting corners for breakfast. Ive never bought anything thats not good.
TJ owned by Aldi north. Run by brother of guy who owns Aldi. It is a German company. They bought out old TJ...known for scoring small runs of creative food products...like maple flavored cookies...or chocolate covered cranberries or cherries(one of my faves)..or high cream content yogurt...still...got some decent products for good prices....i go maybe once a month....
Conservative teens are listening to others to find out how to be Americans and how to improve the USA!!
it would seem that those most offended are those who can afford to shop there and have the free time to bitch about it...
Trader’s Joe’s is great. We love it.
True, the TJ in the Tampa area has great food. Less pricier than Whole Foods. Good wines, too.
Nice and probably exactly right.
LOL Point taken
