Trader Joes is being urged to follow the example of other national food companies and rebrand products that critics say perpetuate racial stereotypes.
An online petition is asking the company to remove racist branding and packaging from its stores, including international food items carrying the names Trader Mings, Trader José and Trader Giottos. Those products and others reflect a narrative of exoticism that perpetuates harmful stereotypes, according to the petition, which on Sunday had been signed by more than 1,500 people.
Theyre racist because they exoticize other cultures, present Joe as this default normal, and then the other characters such as Thai Joe, Trader José, Trader Joe San falling outside of it, said Briones Bedell, 17, who started the petition.
A Trader Joes spokeswoman said in a statement that the company had previously decided to get rid of the names and to rebrand its international foods with the Trader Joes name.

They should. And that very same ‘Cancel Culture’ apparatus should be canceling some other things. Such as:
The airing of the movie Pulp Fiction ..... especially for it’s scene concerning Bonnie, sheets and coffee and storage of a certain individual https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idV4GQRflHM
The airing of the movie Elf ..... wasn’t it not too long ago that many wanted the song Baby It’s Cold Outside taken off the radio because of its strong innuendo about rape, etc. I’m thinking that Buddy the Elf committed rape, false imprisonment and a whole host of other felonious crimes during this event https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7RMy7Vg0LU
Oh wait.....all of these are done by liberal icons and therefore are untouchable.
A 17 year old snowflake is now cause célèbre, the basis for idol worship and repudiating everything she sees fit. What F’ing insanity.
One has to wonder if Whole Bezos or Targay put her up to this...

“Furthermore, the Trader Joe’s company takes pride in the fact that the founder, Joe Coulombe, took inspiration in building the Trader Joes brand from a racist book and a controversial theme park attraction, both of which have received criticism for romanticizing Western Imperialism and fetishizing non-Western peoples.”
“...The book White Shadows in the South Seas was also made into a silent film. This work demonstrates the horrific legacy of trading companies as they exploited and enslaved the South Pacific in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of these regions are still at a disadvantage today because of how traders ravaged their peoples, their societies, and their natural resources. Even though the story calls out the abuses of trading companies, (although it perpetuates other racist tropes such as that of the noble savage and white god narratives common during this period), Trader is still part of the grocery chains name. It leaves the question: What in particular about this book inspired the company?”
“Likewise, the Disneyland Jungle Cruise Ride has received criticism of misappropriating Indigenous culture and perpetuating stereotypes of native people as primitive and savage. The ride features animatronic people only identified as headhunters and natives dressed in some sort (of which culture it is unclear) of traditional dress, performing a dance, and playing music - and threatening violence toward visitors. It has been criticized as exoticism at its worst due to its exhibition of humans as an attraction that otherwise focuses on animals. Given the extensive history of human zoos in the United States, this attraction is unacceptable. In addition, these animatronic people only seem to serve as the punchline of jokes as part of the rides experience. This particular display of exoticism is especially confusing in the context of Trader Joes because it again leaves the question: What in particular about this theme park ride inspired the company?”
“The Trader Joes branding is racist because it exoticizes other cultures - it presents Joe as the default normal and the other characters falling outside of it - they are Arabian Joe, Trader José, and Trader Joe San. The book, White Shadows in the South Seas is racist because it perpetuates the myth of the white god and the noble savage stereotypes. It becomes even more racist in context because the founder of Trader Joe’s said that he was inspired by this book in some way when creating his company, a book which shows traders exotification of non-Western peoples turned into violent exploitation and destruction. The Disney Jungle Cruise is racist because it displays caricatures of non-Western peoples alongside exotic animals, as an attraction at a theme park to be gawked at.”
“The common thread between all of these transgressions is the perpetuation of exoticism, the goal of which is not to appreciate other cultures, but to further other and distance them from the perceived normal. The current branding, given this essential context, then becomes even more trivializing and demeaning than before. What at first seems, at worst, insensitive, further is called into question.”
It is insanity, a bunch of I know everything , but I get insulted over everything , because I’m ignorant to history .
“What a bunch of pansies”
I must strongly object, pansies are beautiful flowers, I cannot allow you to malign them in such a way by comparing them to useless idiots.
“Theyre racist because they exoticize other cultures, present Joe as this default normal, and then the other characters such as Thai Joe, Trader José, Trader Joe San falling outside of it, said Briones Bedell, 17, who started the petition. “
Cover up in bed and suck your thumb, Briones. You’re getting very torqued up over a label on a can of tuna. This can’t be good for your health.
Yes, and they're rewarded not only with no pushback but warp speed capitulation.
I don't understand why people are so AFRAID and cowardly. Just once I would like to see a large company completely ignore these children. Act like their tantrum doesn't even exist.
They would lose very little business because TJ customers are somewhat cultish about shopping there and would continue to do so long after this nonissue went away.
She’s against every aspect of the Trader Joe’s business model from the racist Hawaiian shirts to the word Trader in the name.
Read her Change.org petition.
The New York Times seeks to promote her angry agenda.
I eat organic and would not be caught dead in the Trader.
Enough already!
What of their organic labeled products?
The Slimes reports on 16 years old rants and petitions as news ?
They should close .
Sigh. Chik-Fill-A went belly up without even a whimper of protest. I guess it's Goya foods for me and home cooking.
That’s how it all begins; preaching, posturing and punishing!
Trader Biden’s ... you know, for ethnic Ukrainian cuisine.
