Face masks are emerging as one of the most powerful weapons to fight the novel coronavirus, with growing evidence that facial coverings help prevent transmissioneven if an infected wearer is in close contact with others.
Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said he believes the pandemic could be brought under control over the next four to eight weeks if we could get everybody to wear a mask right now. His comments, made Tuesday with the Journal of the American Medical Association, followed an editorial he and others wrote there emphasizing ample evidence of asymptomatic spread and highlighting new studies showing how masks help reduce transmission.
The research Dr. Redfield cited included a newly published study suggesting that universal use of surgical masks helped reduce rates of confirmed Covid-19 infections among health-care workers at the Mass General Brigham health-care system in Massachusetts.
His comments are the clearest message yet from the CDC, amid fierce debate over facial coverings, fueled initially by shifting messages from federal and global officials about their necessity and then by those espousing individual liberties.
Researchers from around the world have found wearing even a basic cloth face covering is more effective in reducing the spread of Covid-19 than wearing nothing at all. And many are now examining the possibility that masks might offer some personal protection from the virus, despite initial thinking that they mostly protect others.

And i have a list of 70 that say they help.
It’s common sense.
But keep your head firmly in your ass and you won’t need a mask.
The only thing surging is testing.
Thank you. I’m working on a facemask project...
I’ll email the link to my work address.
How entertaining: Dueling face-diaper studies (again!)
I wear masks on my ears to cut out the droning of the Karens about wearing masks.
But...the people are more submissive now, right?
And...there is big revenue to be made harvesting fines from those that refuse the slave muzzle.
And..it seperates the undesirable conservative groups, like those that support Trump, right?
America is not all dumb, it’s clear its all about politics.
If there is to be a civil war its those refusing to bow down to the manufactured pandemic laws.
SARS-CoV-2 doesn’t seem to do well outside. Unless you’re attending a riot or mass protest (or other large gathering of people where everyone is jammed in shoulder-to-shoulder), I wouldn’t bother with it. One study showed it spreads 19x better inside than outside. In another, they tracked down the source of transmission from several thousand different cases. Only 1 could be shown to have taken place outside.
Indoors can be problematic. Outdoors, you should be fine. Beaches and parks should have families in them right now. It would contribute next to nothing to the spread.
Some people wearing seat belts in the car die anyway. It’s just fewer than it nobody wore seat belts. Reducing risk does not mean eliminating it.
At this point there are so many dueling studies, everyone has one they can wave around to buttress their position.
Karpov hasn’t been on the FreeRepublic for a whole year yet. That that for what it’s worth.
“Its almost like the mask mandate is a test to see how easily we will obey without thinking.”
You do have an interesting point there. The people in the background that are actually behind this COVID 19 & BLM crap are not totally stupid. Betcha they are studying exactly what you pointed out.
Also, the effect of masking should lag by a period equal to the incubation period with noise induced by sampling intervals. The data indicates that the positive rate of tests falls instantly, something which is unlikely if the masks were the only source of the effect.
More insight can be gained by looking at the effective R(t) rate for the entire state of Massachusetts, which is here .
The R(t) rate was already falling dramatically before the sheltering, or the mask intervention occurred. In terms of the slope of R(t) it flattened out during the period of time when the interventions were in effect, and even grew some, although it was still less than one.
It is very hard to determine which interventions work, or even if they are doing anything at all. Note that R(t) was falling rapidly in Massachusetts before the shelter order even happened.
You are dead wrong, the incubation period is 5.2 days with a 99% range of 2.1 - 7.2 days so please lets make sure we are dealing with the facts as they are not as you wish them to be.
Clearly mask wearer are getting covid anyway.
I also hear that people who drive sober sometimes get into car accidents anyway. Doesn't mean I'm going to stop doing it. It's not a silver bullet but every little bit helps.
I stand corrected. Even so, most mask mandates are very recent and hardly ever enforced.
I came out of the store yesterday. I loaded the stuff in the truck. My mind was elsewhere. I found myself driving down the street.
A moment later I realized I still had the mask on.
I thought of you, ripping it off before I saw anyone I knew.
Your credibility is quite in doubt. I have an equally as long list that says opposite. The science is conflicted, therefore no conclusion can be made. You might know that if you were a real scientist.
What about the mountain of “old” studies that show with absolute effect that masks don’t make a difference.
The amazing thing about the whole blocking droplets thing is that the N95 mask, the gold standard has a valve thingie that does guess what? Yea, it just sends a jet of your breath out each time you breath at the person in front or to the side of you depending on the design. This is because the mask maintains it seal by making it easy to expell your breath while you draw air in through the filter. This also prevents the mask from becoming blocked and unusable by those .. hold now.. droplets.
The common cloth face mask cannot and does not maintain any seal and does little to nothing to filter incoming virus particles. It does however clog with... yes.. droplets .. and then you breath is forced up past your nose or out the sides.. and you struggle to breathe. All of the while you are concentrating any virus particles you encounter in the air caught inside of the mask.
All of this has been demonstrated.. and you can go anywhere and see this story play out for yourself as people fiddle with their masks and walk around with clouded glasses, and free their nose from the mask to breathe.

That I agree with.
I think only WHO made that claim and it was widely ridiculed.
