Face masks are emerging as one of the most powerful weapons to fight the novel coronavirus, with growing evidence that facial coverings help prevent transmissioneven if an infected wearer is in close contact with others.
Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said he believes the pandemic could be brought under control over the next four to eight weeks if we could get everybody to wear a mask right now. His comments, made Tuesday with the Journal of the American Medical Association, followed an editorial he and others wrote there emphasizing ample evidence of asymptomatic spread and highlighting new studies showing how masks help reduce transmission.
The research Dr. Redfield cited included a newly published study suggesting that universal use of surgical masks helped reduce rates of confirmed Covid-19 infections among health-care workers at the Mass General Brigham health-care system in Massachusetts.
His comments are the clearest message yet from the CDC, amid fierce debate over facial coverings, fueled initially by shifting messages from federal and global officials about their necessity and then by those espousing individual liberties.
Researchers from around the world have found wearing even a basic cloth face covering is more effective in reducing the spread of Covid-19 than wearing nothing at all. And many are now examining the possibility that masks might offer some personal protection from the virus, despite initial thinking that they mostly protect others.

It’s a crap study with weasel words in the conclusion;
“Universal masking at MGB was associated with a significantly lower rate of SARS-CoV-2 positivity among HCWs. This association may be related [<- weasel words] to a decrease in transmission between patients and HCWs and among HCWs. The decrease in HCW infections could be confounded [<- weasel words] by other interventions inside and outside of the health care system (Figure), such as restrictions on elective procedures, social distancing measures, and increased masking in public spaces, which are limitations of this study.”
They actually admit committing the logical fallacy “too few alternatives”!!
Today on a bike ride, I spoke with a woman who had a mask on. After telling me how awful the response of DJT to the virus was, I asked, “when do you think you’ll have the courage not to wear one?”
Of course, that set her off. and she launched into Gov. Kemp for his no-mask mandate.
I said, “well, I’m pro choice. My body, my choice - right?”
She was enraged! She loudly states that she had an abortion at 23, the best thing she ever did, because she had two wonderful daughters now, and it was the right thing to do in her situation. Then she said “You’re just being selfish and not caring about others.”
“I bet other people thought you were being selfish too, in your abortion decision...’
I don’t think she had ever had the tables turned on her like that. I wished her well as I shoved off.
Ain’t buying
This is pure bullskat.
If the pandemic isn't "over" in 8 weeks, the Deep State will demand another six weeks of masks to "fix" the problem. After that, the election will be history.
Get used to the idea. Mask hysteria is going to be mandated until after the elections. The real reason for wearing them is not to bring the pandemic under control. It is to bring the country under their control.
Right now this seems to be working nicely as a strategy. Fear, panic, and pitting us all against one another works.
Fake studies
I really don’t want to spend $15-$20 bucks for a useless piece of cloth that will be contaminated beyond even uselessness after the first 20 minutes I wear it but a good FU message like that makes it tempting. :)
I made a couple of homemade masks from the legs of an old pair of jersey-type sweat pants. Too hot to wear in May much less now in July.
My cowboy bandana gets me in and out of the grocery store and Post Office every two weeks or so and if necessary I am stocked up to stay at home for several months. I refuse to participate in society as much as possible until this madness burns itself out. Starving the corps any way I can.
Do you agree with the theory that says because the virus is smaller than the smallest particle the mask can block effectively, that the mask offers no protection from the virus?
Yep. WSJ is a bird cage liner living off a reputation acquired when it was real journalism. Now it is just garbage from whomever wants to contribute a piece (of crap)
Yes, that is correct.
It is the death rate that is important...it is a cold virus...everyone will be exposed at sometime...unless they never leave the house and no one ever comes in..
It is time to just get on with life...
Old iron worker proverb...Lifes a bitch and then you die
So its your contention that the virus travels through the air by itself and not attached to a larger molecule?
Fortunately the thousands of diseased and illiterate illegals pouring in through the southern border has nothing to do with it.
Yeah, I’m in about the same situation. I go to town about once every three weeks unless I’m expecting something important at the Post Office. Even before this idiocy, I hated going into town.
As I told a friend, why not just wear two masks when you’re around me? It’s a win - win !
I have a P.O. Box but online bill paying has made it almost unnecessary to check it.
I am used to self-isolating/lockdown/home detention, whatever you want to call it. Cared for my mother w/Alzheimer’s from ‘06-’16, couldn’t leave her alone long after the first few years, and since she passed didn’t feel like going anywhere.
Ironically last Dec. I started feeling like getting after it and thought of what adventures I might try once spring came. But ... you know the rest. lol
I did much the same, with both parents, one after the other, 1996 to 2008. Kudos to you for doing it. Is hard. I hope to not outlive my body or my mind.
I read some lib articles in USA Today etc. that purported to debunk that. The idea is that the virus is always part of a larger particle of water vapor. ie saliva so the mask will block it.
I saw through that logic in about two seconds. The mask will become saturated with water vapor very quickly. Virus will become concentrated on the mask as more is deposited with each exhalation. The moisture will evaporate from the mask. If it didn't it would be literally dripping in about 45 minutes. That moisture will drag the virus through the mask and evaporation will carry the virus into the air. Where it will rapidly drop to the ground.
Exactly-cases are supposedly skyrocketing after the mandates.
No - That was earlier and it was because they were worried about a supply chain disruption. So - yeah - they lied - but in the same sentence they also said they needed them for the medical field.
Now - I suppose one could believe Mike Pence is lying to you - since he has been saying this all along.
I could suppose Trump is ALSO lying to you - since he also believes masks work.
Or - perhaps - most people on here are just plain stupid and just want to believe the President and Vice President are either 1) Lying to them or 2) just too stupid to know the difference.
Dealers choice.
There are a thousand textbook references that describe the various forms of viral transmission that you are welcome to look up. The question that you asked is a mask prevent viral infection and the answer is no.
Please feel free to educate yourself on modes of viral transmission.
