US Tests Hypersonic Missile Which Flies '17 Times Faster Than The Speed Of Sound'

The US defence officials revealed that they tested a hypersonic missile that President Donald Trump has long touted as a ‘super-duper’ new military weapon.

The United States defence officials reportedly revealed that they tested a hypersonic missile that President Donald Trump has long touted as a ‘super-duper’ new military weapon. According to an international media outlet, a senior defence official called the testing a ‘success’ and added that the missile flew 17 times faster than the speed of sound. The official also informed that test was initially tested back in March over the Pacific Ocean, however, very little additional information was revealed.

According to reports, the US President has taken a special interest in the missile and he even oft-cited the test that the Pentagon had described being as ‘successful’. While Donald Trump has repeatedly made comments about a supersonic missile that is faster than any other missile, the defence official reportedly said that missiles being developed by the United States will not be nuclear-capable. Even with the fastest missile, it was also noted that the American effort still lags behind those of Moscow and Beijing’s already fielded weapons systems.

US plans to conduct 40 flight test

As per reports, the hypersonic missiles are traditionally defined as missiles that travel at least five times the speed of sound, which is more than 3,800 miles per hour. Given the tremendous speed and ability to manoeuvre in the atmospheres, the hypersonic missiles are also seen as particularly hard to defend against using conventional missile defence systems. While speaking to the media outlet, the official said that trying to defend against a hypersonic vehicle becomes very difficult to deal with as high speed and uncertainty in-flight trajectory are combined together.

Not so. Your mother-in-law would learn how to nag you 17 days in advance.

Heat is a big issue. That is a material science problem. Yes on control surfaces but I would expect small and another material science issue. The space shuttle, LEO, ... and all ballistic rockets are hyper sonic but these weapons are not designed for space re-entry. Skip them in the atmosphere. Or maybe keep the low. iDK any details. SR71 was almost hypersonic. That’s 60 year old tech. 17 x sound at what altitude. That’s a BS measurement. Give me ground based speed.

For example just falling can break speed of sound.

We have missiles for decades that near the target and when they explode either have steel balls or rods that destroy the target.

Strange that the article did not name the missile accurately:

US Army Hypersonic Missile AGM-183A

It's not that uncertain. At those speeds, your ability to vary trajectory is extremely limited. Too much vary and friction/turbulence is going to rip your missile apart.

“So....Russia still has the GDP of NYS so what are they really gonna do?”

What the heck does GDP have to do with it? Nothing! As someone else pointed out Japan’s GDP was much smaller than ours in 1941 when they sunk a good portion of our naval fleet in the pacific. It took us years to win that fight and thousands of American lives. GDP did not make one bit of difference and it does not now when it comes to Russia. Their GDP did not stop them from marching in and taking over Crimea — which no one even attempted to stop.

It is a good thing you are not an American military leader!

Anyways, i do not understand why the USA and Russia cannot become good friends.
Why?
This is a subject i just don’t know that much about.
Why are we still enemies in 2020?
Wouldn’t the Russian economy prosper with a good relation with the US?
USA and Japan are now close buds why not Russia?
Is it a PRIDE thing?
i just dunno..

anyways as far as i know CHINA is by far a much more formidable and dangerous enemy than the Soviet Union ever was, Their CCP tentacles are embedded everywhere..

“Anyways, i do not understand why the USA and Russia cannot become good friends.....”

I agree. 100%. The Russian people are probably more like those who spend time on FR than the left-leaning mob in America and woke Europe. No country is perfect. Right?

I like your comparison to Japan. There is also a comparison to be made with Vietnam. I did not go to Vietnam but was in the military (Navy) during that disaster. Whoever would have guessed about the outcome of either of those countries?

I spend time visiting countries around the world with real people — on YouTube. The link below is from a Russian who travels around the Russia countryside explaining how people in Russia live. He also visits the cities and they are no different than how our cities “used to be” before the Dems and inclusion crowd demolished them.

https://bit.ly/2OIDj3e

The video could be propaganda, but I absolutely don’t believe it is. This guy is very prolific. You should watch some of his other videos. The Russian people are just like us. They are trying to eke out a living. This particular video is made in a small village and tells a story about them trying to keep the village from totally going away. I grew up in a small rural town and can personally relate well to this story.

Like Japan and Vietnam, there have been changes. It is true that many Russians (and their leaders) are disappointed about the USSR disappearing. But the Japs were disappointed when they lost, too. But, look where they are now. If you look at the history of Russia over the last 100 years or so, up until the end of the USSR they were blessed with one horrible leader after another. The world suffered — but so did the Russian people. Lenin and the incredibly effective real killer — Stalin. That’s pretty much over, now.

Again, they are probably more like us than us (as an overall country).

Nearly every ballistic missile with a range over 250 miles is “hypersonic”. The V2 was just barely under Hypersonic (in 1944). With a ballistic missile, the longer the range, the faster it is going. Hypersonic only means something new if its airbreathing (and isn’t just being lobbed into the vacuum of space).

Ballistic missiles create a HUGE thermal signature when launched, easily visible from satellite.

Air-breathing hypersonics, not so much.

Bald and Bankrupt is a great youTube Channel with a British guy that speaks Russian who travels throughout the eastern block.

Anyone under 35 in Russia is pro western/pro capitalism.

I believe George Soros is the main reason russian relations with the US have been set back 15 years, with us meddling in the Ukraine on behalf of Oligarchs.
