LONDON - Britain said on Saturday it was pausing its daily update of the death toll from the coronavirus after the government ordered a review into the calculation of the data over concerns the toll might have been exaggerated.
Academics have said the way that Public Health England (PHE), the government agency responsible for managing infectious disease outbreaks, calculates the figures in England means they may be distorted compared to other parts of the United Kingdom.
Currently the daily deaths measure counts all people who have tested positive for coronavirus and since died, with no cut-off between time of testing and date of death, a message on the governments website said.
There have been claims that the lack of cut-off may distort the current daily deaths number. We are therefore pausing the publication of the daily figure while this is resolved.
Health Minister Matt Hancock on Friday ordered a review into the PHEs reporting after the academics said patients who tested positive for coronavirus, but were successfully treated, would still be counted as dying from the virus even if they had a heart attack or were run over by a bus three months later.

That is why Los Angeles has no recoveries. 146,000 active cases.
17 Jul: BBC: Hancock calls for urgent review into coronavirus death data in England
Health Secretary Matt Hancock has called for an urgent review into how coronavirus deaths have been recorded in England.
Prof Carl Heneghan from University of Oxford, who spotted the issue with the data, told the BBC there was “huge variation” in the numbers of daily deaths reported in England by PHE.
While NHS England currently reports 30-35 deaths per day, Public Health England (PHE) data often shows double that or more, he said.
The reason is that anyone who has tested positive for coronavirus but then died at a later date of another cause would still be included in PHE’s Covid-19 death figures.
“By this PHE definition, no one with Covid in England is allowed to ever recover from their illness,” Prof Heneghan says...

Newsmax has a reporter who claims a White House source told her the CDC has indeed been busted for overcounting which is the real reason HHS took over (despite the smoke that Kayleigh laid down the other day).
Seems Trump does not want to light this candle directly with an election coming so Boris Johnson is doing him a solid.
Here in FL the local Orlando Fox channel did an investigation and has found hundreds of labs reporting positive cases . Cases like 96% positive when infact it was only 3%. A guy had a motor cycle crash and he got put down for covid 19 when the reporter asked the local health official about this he tried to explain that maybe the virus caused him to have a crash and that is why they said it was covid 19.
What we are seeing is the left manipulating the data so they can get mail in voting, whilst they keep their scumbags on the streets to keep the elderly from voting in person.

So very maddening is the medias mindless acceptance of these numbers. Not an ounce of intellectual curiosity or professional integrity anywhere in the mainstream media.
Thanks for posting that. When asked about this in her presser K MAC rattled off a long list of dry technical reasons why the counting was moved from CDC to HHS. It now appears that was a delaying tactic while they came up with a rollout strategy.
Harder to accuse Trump of being political if the first questioning happens in England.
If you’ve watched any White House pressers lately it’s clear most reporters were riding the short bus in school.
