But i refuse to validate peoples fears to make them feel better when what they are dojng is actually not effecfive

There is plenty of evidence of some level or effectiveness, and there are studies showing that masks are far from perfect. There's the Al-Asmary study showing that intermittent mask use is worse than no mask. Consistent mask use was slightly better than no mask.

There are few studies with both infected and uninfected people masked. The theme through all the studies I have read so far is that there are inconsistencies and it might help in some cases. They seemed to help in the salon but that tended to be shorter interaction times. Lots of confounding factors in other studies liike other protection makes it difficult to separate the effect of masks.
