The Justice Department on Thursday carried out the second federal execution this week, following another set of Supreme Court orders issued in the dead of night saying the lethal injection could proceed.
Federal officials in Indiana executed Wesley Purkey, 68. He was pronounced dead at 8:19 a.m., they said. Purkey was convicted in 2003 of raping and murdering 16-year-old Jennifer Long, and had also killed Mary Ruth Bales, an 80-year-old woman, court records show.
*** Purkeys execution, like Lees, was carried out following expansive legal battles that unfolded on multiple fronts before eventually arriving at the Supreme Court. In various cases, Purkeys attorneys argued he was not competent to be executed and had poor counsel in the past; he joined with other death-row inmates challenging the new lethal-injection protocol; and his spiritual adviser asked to delay the execution, citing the coronavirus pandemic.
*** Unlike Lees lethal injection, which some relatives of his victims opposed and denounced after it happened, a relative of Purkeys victim spoke to reporters Thursday morning to say he long awaited the execution.
William Long, Jennifer Longs father, told reporters after Purkey was pronounced dead that he had been dreaming of it for years. He decried the length of time it took for Purkeys sentence to be carried out, saying theres monsters out there . . . they need to be put down like the dogs they are.
It has been a long time coming, Long said of the execution, according to the pool report. He needed to take his last breath. He took my daughters last breath. . . . There is no closure and there never will be because I wont get my daughter back.

Wapo cries over a murderous pig.
Can’t read the article because Washington Post wants me to pay for it. Which judges voted against the execution?
Maybe they ought to do a one act play before the execution depicting the crimes the criminal did. First the play...then the execution. Might be a way to communicate the horror the perp caused to the victim or victims.
The four liberal justices dissented, as they had for the first case earlier this week.
How long do we have to wait for that @$$h*le Army Major from Ft. Hood to fry?
He didn’t have dementia when he killed them.
Another reason not to wait so long for an execution.
If dementia were a bar to execution, there would be outbreaks of dementia on death rows throughout the nation.
Guilty because of mental incompetence rather than not... hook him up
Funny how the left protect these scumbags from execution yet they kill millions of new life everyday under the womens health fasade of planned parenthood
“The four liberal justices dissented, as they had for the first case earlier this week.”
Not that Bill Clinton (and maybe Obama) were FOR the Death Penalty, and Clinton even went back to Arkansas to oversee an execution that was clearly out to lunch and arguably should not have been executed, at least per existing rules.
Yet who appointed these 4 justices who tried to stop this execution, at the last minute? Obama and Clinton.
They get away with it because we’re so busy bitching about Susan Collins and a handful of other Republicans being RINOs and wanting to ‘teach the GOP a lesson’ that we never realize that Collins VOTED for all 5 of the justices who upheld justice in this case - same for McConnnell and Graham and Cruz (at least those they could vote for).
...and we never consider how many Democrats voted for all 5 of them. In case you don’t know, the answer is ZERO. In fact, I doubt any voted for more than 1 or 2 of them.
No mention (at least in the excerpt) of the Rat judge who keeps putting out injunctions and stays to stop the executions until SCOTUS has to slap her down...
What is it with the media that NEVER have a care about the VICTIMS...
The hateful Washington Post has spoken.
And aren’t the people at DOJ just horrible.
