Social media is a misnomer and non-sequitor ANTIsocial and not in the middle.
I have come to believe that we have turned a corner with regards to the internet. When it first became mainstream, it was an invaluable conduit of free information and a way for people to connect across the country and even across the world.
Now I think that the internet has been fully weaponized as a tool of influence and control. Most people are sheep, and will follow wherever they think the flock is going. This is especially true of younger people, who live for being part of the crowd. So, "social media" is a tool created to give people a false idea of where the majority opinion is, where the flock is going.
We all know that there are huge numbers of fake accounts on things like Twitter and Facebook, and the concept of sock-puppeting has been around since the first web forum, so it is a near certainty that a lot of the "me too!" stuff that goes on is just evil people trying to influence the masses. "I'm outraged about this issue!" "Me too!" "Me too!" "We should go protest in the streets!" "Yeah!" And most of it, in the beginning, is fake sentiments created by bots, paid agitators, or ideologues. But, after a while, once enough people see these comments, they think "Oh, everybody must think this way, so I will too!" And away we go.
