Arrest made in fire at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ocala

Marion County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a Dunnellon man and accused him of setting a fire Saturday morning inside Queen of Peace Catholic Church. The blaze caused significant damage but no one was injured.

In an interview with sheriff’s Detective John Lightle, suspect Steven Anthony Shields said he has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and is not taking his medication.

Shields said that what he did “awesome,” and he smiled and laughed while he was questioned at the Sheriff’s Office, according to an arrest affidavit. Referring to himself as the “king” and saying he was on a “mission,” Shields told the detective he has problems with the Catholic Church and made reference to several Bible passages, including the Book of Revelations.

The detective said Shields reeked of gasoline and admitted setting the church foyer on fire.

Shields, 23, was booked into the Marion County Jail on several charges including attempted second-degree murder, arson to a structure, and burglary of an occupied structure. He is being held without bail.

Despite the damage at the church, normal activities are continuing. In fact, Mass was celebrated Saturday evening in the parish hall, and the Mass schedule will be followed on Sunday.

“We praise God that no one was injured. We join in prayer for Father (Patrick) O’Doherty, the parishioners of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, our first responders and the gentleman who caused the damage. May we come to know the Peace of the Lord,” said Jennifer Drow, senior director of communications for the Diocese of Orlando, in a prepared statement. O’Doherty is the church pastor.

Sheriff’s Office officials said it doesn’t appear that Shields was a member of the church, although he reportedly has been seen in the parking lot on several occasions.

The victim told Marion County sheriff’s deputies that 23-year-old Steven Anthony Shields allegedly had swung a crowbar at her twice before telling her to lie on the ground so he could hit her on the head and kill her. She said she fled from their Dunnellon home and went to a neighbor’s house to call for help. Deputies then spoke with Shields in the front yard of the residence. He claimed that he did want to murder the victim with a crowbar but denied swinging it at her, a sheriff’s office report says.
