IMHO Teachers Unions do put the interests of children first, they are all out for themselves.

It’s a tough call - open the schools and (thankfully) we won’t have to deal with this generation of America-haters (sometimes called ‘teachers’). But then they’ll be replaced, with no benefit to the country.
So, my vote is to KEEP THEM CLOSED, since that means they are under surveillence by parents during remote ‘instruction’ (or at least under the threat of such).
Not opening schools is part of the liberal plan to crash the economy. If schools don’t open then it is difficult for corporate employees to return to work when they have kids at home.
No work. No pay. Abolish public education.
Our School just proposed a bunch of new buses, and a huge increase to their budget. The idiot citizens passed it.

Cut their funding, Mr. President. And don’t even worry about whether you have the authority to do so or not. Obama and the Supreme Court have already determined that presidents can make their own law at will.
What organization in the world allows subordinates waaaaay down the ranks to defy the wishes of the chief executive? Time to let these a$$holes and their union know the President answers to the voters, not to them. If Trump put them all in a bus and pushed it off a cliff, I’d cheer.

Teachers’ unions are among the most imbecilic groups around. Hell, here in Illinois they go on strike every year, and a hell of a lot of us (taxpayers) hope they stay out on strike!
They don’t want to open schools. Then stop paying them. There are online schools already set up. Our school system is going to allow students to go with an online only option. I think they are contracting with an established program in another state. Online schools will hire teachers to help with the influx of students. It is not exactly homeschooling, but it’s close.
I read the whole article and admit to still not understanding the motivation behind this drive to not return to work.
I just spoke to a friend who’s teaching fifth grade; she’s not worried about COVID. She’s worried that schools will become mob or crazy-person targets, because they’re easy victims and are letting go of their SRO’s. That’s her concern.
She’s now also being mandated to teach propaganda; the BLM and LGBTQRSTUV kind. She’s pissed, but literally cannot afford to lose her job, with a five year old autistic child at home who is also in need of extra schooling and speech therapy. She’s going to balance wherever she can, and flee the state (IL) when possible.
Is that surprising to anyone? The teachers union is part and parcel of the democrat party.

The vast majority of Americans want schools to reopen. Americans will stop funding schools that refuse to reopen. Teachers will be fired and school buildings will have electricity shut off and be abandoned. School buses won’t roll and school cafeterias will stop operating.
America has never had a better opportunity than right now to break the back of teachers’ unions. Taxes are not collected to hand to teachers who refuse to teach and to support personnel who stay at home.
Let's get serious for a moment. We have hard statistics that it is the elderly and not the young that are most in danger from Covid-19.
We also know that a large portion of the youth who had classes canceled this spring have fallen behind in their studies and if schools are not reopened this fall, many will likely loose a year of education.
Just what does that mean? Will those who are now theoretically juniors in high school be allowed to graduate with a diploma next June? If so they are going to not be prepared properly for college, jobs, etc. If the schools try to enforce some “absolute standards” on educational achievement, then there will be cry that this is racial discrimination or that we are going to make children suffer because of something that was not their fault.
Similarly, many liberals say that the school lunch (and in some places breakfast) programs are critical for the health of a large percentage of school children. How will they get their meals if they don't go to school?
And then there is the question of those parents who need to work at least part time and have no way of caring for or home schooling their children while they need to work to survive. Then as the article points out there are questions of morbidity, drug use, gang activity etc. where school can help prevent problems.
To come out against reopening schools as a knee jerk reaction against Trump ignores many reasons why it might be “good” to reopen schools this fall. It should be broadly publicly debated. Teachers and Teachers unions should not embrace the “Resist Trump” movement, they should calmly discuss reasons.
If you were getting paid in full to stay home............. Besides they are diligently working on the new curriculum that doesn’t include white kids
