On June 26, Dr. Anthony Fauci announced it's "unlikely" that a COVID-19 vaccine with 70-75% efficacy taken by two-thirds of Americans can provide herd immunity to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
His statement has since stirred discussion about America's anti-vaccine movement.
A crucial question remains unanswered, however: Is COVID-19 even subject to herd immunity? From universities to sports teams, top experts are still debating this issue.
While the world anxiously awaits a vaccine, the length and durability of the protective immunity it would provide is far more in doubt than one might think.
A new study from China shows that antibodies can disappear in two to three months. The study further found that immunity is shorter for asymptomatic patients than symptomatic ones: The less symptomatic a person is, the weaker the immune response and antibody strength. "Young people who have mild disease or asymptomatic disease, their antibodies may never rise very high," said Sankar Swaminathan, chief of infectious diseases at the University of Utah. "We don't even know if those antibodies are protective."
How does herd immunity work?
Herd immunity occurs when a sufficient proportion of a population is immune to an infectious disease -- either through prior illness or vaccination -- so that contagion from person to person is unlikely.
According to Johns Hopkins, 70%-90% of the population (230-300 million Americans) needs to develop protective antibodies to COVID-19 to achieve herd immunity.
Approximately 2.74 million Americans have tested positive for the coronavirus, over 130,000 of which have died (case fatality of 4.74%). By contrast, the case fatality of the flu in the U.S. is roughly 0.1%.
Absent the existence of a COVID-19 vaccine, any reasonable extrapolation of the data -- even at half the current case fatality rate, means we will see a seven-figure body count that exceeds 5 million deaths

As I understand it, there is NO immunity with a vaccine. Herd immunity can only be achieved without a vaccine.
The numbers in the article are way off. Herd immunity is in fact closer to 65%. And the disease does not have a 4% mortality rate. If you are under 60 and don’t have comorbidities, the number is much closer to the flu’s .01%, if not less.

I was reading an Ohio State football fan forum today; these people are hardly wild eyed radical students, most are alumni of twenty to thirty year standing, and their meek acceptance that the season won’t happen, and that we must shelter and wear masks was disgusting...but as the saying goes, it is what it is, and we should probably realize people are never going to properly contextualize this so called crisis...this little jewel from China dropped into the dems laps, and to their credit they took it and ran with it, properly gauging the bargain basement fear quotient of the average American, particularly the females, and played the country for the fools most of us actually are...

To claim that any vaccine would be more effective at achieving herd immunity than the original virus is scientific gibberish.
We managed to get rid of H1N1 and SARS without a vaccine what the hell is the difference, oh yeah I forgot they were on OBAMMIES watch!!!
The point is that you personally don’t need 70%-90% of the population to be immune in order to be less likely to catch the virus. You just need the majority of the people you come in contact with to be immune. Herd immunity is built slowly in clusters.
I contracted the Hong Kong flu and I will tell you I thought I was going to die, sick for 4 weeks OMG!! I have NEVER had another flu or cold since then NEVER had a vaccine either I have since then got some kind of super immune system!!, Having owned restaurants most of my life and being in the public for very long hours day after day, having sick employees around me I find that just AMAZING!!

Was told it was going to burn itself out in April (https://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3834525/posts). Was told the same thing in May (http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3849921/posts). Same thing in June (http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/3851711/posts). Now it’s July and I’m still hearing it. Death totals across the US are flat for now. Hopefully they’ll begin declining again soon, but for now the 7-day moving average is flat.
A vaccine against >200 different viruses from at least 4 different families? That would take a lot of effort and money and it would have to change drastically every single year.
I’m assuming they’re talking about case fatality rate, which is high but dropping quickly (it was ~5.7% a month ago). Infection fatality rate has been calculated to have a lower bound by CDC at 0.26% and a likely range of 0.5% and 1% by Johns Hopkins. I haven’t seen any updates on those numbers since May.
And they tell us to wear a mask? Now the FDA says any device marketed or promoted to prevent or cure a disease must be tested and validated before being promoted. So just how do these experts, governors and other nincompoops get off on pushing the mask as a medical cure or preventative?

Wouldn’t a scientist know that herd immunity has nothing to do with a vaccine? Herd immunity is the result of a natural process.
