U.S. sets single-day record for new COVID-19 cases -- 60,021

July 8 (UPI) -- The United States has set a new one-day record for new COVID-19 cases -- more than 60,000, surpassing the previous mark by several thousand.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University said 60,021 new cases were recorded Tuesday, just days after the previous national record of 54,500.

Updated figures by the university on Wednesday morning placed total U.S. cases at 2.99 million and the death toll at about 131,500.

More than three dozen states have shown increases over the past week and health officials say hospitalizations and patients in intensive care have also risen significantly.

In Florida, health officials reported Wednesday that hospitals in 14 of the state's 44 counties were operating at at least 90 percent capacity.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, said it had just 38 ICU beds available and Miami-Dade County reported just 155.

Gov. Ron DeSantis, however, told reporters Tuesday state hospitals had "abundant capacity" to treat coronavirus patients.

Florida on Tuesday reported at least 5,000 new cases for the 14th straight day.

In California, San Francisco has indefinitely delayed reopening plans for outdoor bars and indoor restaurants.

Public Health Chief Grant Colfax warned that the surge of cases may eventually be too much for the city's health system to handle.

"At this rate it could overwhelm the health care system and cause many deaths if we don't get a handle on this right away," Colfax told reporters. "I need San Franciscans to understand how serious and precarious this situation is."

Although ICU capacity in California is about 30 percent, Colfax warned the situation "could change at any time.

"We know when this virus takes off, it takes off fast."

Los Angeles County reported more than 4,000 new cases Tuesday, the highest daily figure in the Los Angeles metro area to date. Health officials said 46 people died and the county's daily positivity rate rose to nearly 12 percent.

Lol, the “news” isn’t even trying to verify basic facts, they just parrot what Soros tells them and whatever will make the worst headline.

California: Los Angeles County reported 4,015 new cases today with the note: “The high number of cases are, in part, due to a backlog of about 2,000 test results received from one lab who just submitted lab results from July 2-5 today” On July 5, Los Angeles County had communicated that “Saturday’s number is missing lab reports from one of the larger labs.”

So we hear these numbers spewed daily but the numbers I’m curious about are the number of people who have recovered.

Out of the 3 million cases claimed, how many have gotten over it and are back to their daily routines?

Cases! Cases! CASES!

It’s all the MSM has left to try any gin up hysteria. But, after 4 months of this crap, people are tired of the hysteria. You can only scream “danger!” just so many times before people become numb to the histrionics.

Trump needs to fire Fauci and put Ron Paul on the task force.

Why is the number of total tests never included in these type of articles?

We are nearing 700,000 tests done every day. So 60,000 positives means 640,000 (over 90%) came back not positive. That to me, changes the entire narrative.

Ho hum.

Why not report new cases of toenail fungus, or poison ivy infections? It’s the death rate thing that should be what alerts authorities to manhandle society into submission.

Perhaps reporting Covid-19 declining death rates wouldn’t have the same panic inducing affect? I dunno..

Cities around the country are seeing the results of two decisions.

First, allowing 10s of thousands of protesters to gather, screaming, chanting , singing, fighting police, sweating, touching each other.

We spread the virus throughout that population.

And then, not running any outreach to protesters to get tested. Instead, they all went home, and spread it to all their friends and family. And now we are seeing that outbreak, mostly in younger people.

Nobody in Dallas is “going to their local beach” and getting infected.

There is no major spread in small communities with beaches, just the big cities.

I don’t care — we need herd immunity, let the young get sick.

But the medical community destroyed their credibility when they pretended protests were safe.

nice statement from dr. ron there. love how he uses “warn” when describing the CDC’s statement....which underscores the agenda. We can’t let this turn into a non-pandemic!!!! What then?!

I think the CDC has not required that report, because Virginia is NOT TELLING US how many are “recovered”, and we otherwise have pretty detailed numbers.

Hospitals ARE telling us how many people are not in the hospitals anymore. Although the hospital numbers have never matched the VDH numbers for “hospitalizatiobns”.

Anyway, we only have big protests in Richmond, and those were somewhat small, so we haven’t seen a big spike in cases like states with bigger cities and larger protests.

It’s not even a flu anymore.

More like a common cold.

Or cooties.

Dr Atlas says look at the ages of the infected not just numbers
Most of the cases now are younger people, drives the overall mortality risk to .04% or less and helps the HIT ( herd immunity threshold ) grow
When it reaches perhaps 20-30%, the virus is defeated ...summer is definitely the time to do this

Los Angeles County sporadically reported numbers all thru the 4th of July weekend, and then did a massive data dump yesterday. This article is so off base...I’ve noticed other counties in CA under or not reporting for days and then doing a huge spike in one day. And then we get this sort of dishonest (or incompetent) reporting.

Seems like a lot of places did that. We see that every weekend as well. I would assume they’re still doing death investigations whenever they happen, but the reporting definitely seems to lag. Just more evidence of government incompetence at the local level to go along with the incompetence we see every day at the state and Federal levels.

Yea, and this virus is so dangerous that the 60,000 “new infections” were sent back to their homes or apartments to self isolate with their spouses and children.

No kidding. FFS. The key part of the article is the word “recorded”.
