Blackhawks keeping name, pledge more support to Native American communities

CHICAGO — The Chicago Blackhawks say they will continue to use their team name because it honours a Native American leader who has been an inspiration to generations.

"The Chicago Blackhawks name and logo symbolizes an important and historic person, Black Hawk of Illinois’ Sac & Fox Nation, whose leadership and life has inspired generations of Native Americans, veterans and the public," the NHL team said in a statement Tuesday.

"We celebrate Black Hawk’s legacy by offering ongoing reverent examples of Native American culture, traditions and contributions, providing a platform for genuine dialogue with local and national Native American groups. As the team’s popularity grew over the past decade, so did that platform and our work with these important organizations.

"We recognize there is a fine line between respect and disrespect, and we commend other teams for their willingness to engage in that conversation. Moving forward, we are committed to raising the bar even higher to expand awareness of Black Hawk and the important contributions of all Native American people. "

Under renewed pressure to change their name, the NFL’s Washington Redskins announced a "thorough review" of the issue. In baseball, the Cleveland Indians are also looking into it while the Atlanta Braves declined.

Good luck.

Once the race hustlers get their payout and name change from the Indians and the Redskins, they’ll move on to the Braves, and the Blackhawks, and there will be much more pressure.

No one wants to be rasis.

The Blackhawks have one of the most beautiful logos in all sport. The team blows though.

I’m all for wiping out every mention of Indians in our culture.

Names of tribes, chiefs, locations. Just wipe it clean.

For Cleveland: the legend is that the name Indians was in tribute to Louis Sockalexis, a “Native American” who played for the Cleveland Spiders. But this “is generally discredited given the discriminatory treatment of Native Americans in general, and Sockalexis in particular during that era...
“Defenders often claim there is an intention to honor Native Americans and that there are ways to do so while retaining their current representations. Opponents of Native American mascots make no distinction between respectful or disparaging usage, both being based upon stereotypes. “—Wikipedia

That team and that name have filled the Stadium since I was a kid.(Now in my 80’s) No need to change it, especially to placate a mob of Marxists.

“Names of tribes, chiefs, locations. Just wipe it clean.”

As with most things the left does, the unintended consequences are staggering.

As an American with Irish blood, I kinda like the nickname “Fighting Irish”. Makes me sound bad...and nobody messes with me.

They could just make it “Hawks” as in the bird but chose to keep the full BlackHawks name.

“In 2010, sports columnist Damien Cox called on the franchise to retire the “racially insensitive” logo, saying that, “Clearly, no right-thinking person would name a team after an aboriginal figure these days any more than they would use Muslims or Africans or Chinese or any ethnic group to depict a specific sporting notion.”—Wikipedia

All of the teams whose names are Indian-derived are paying them s compliment. This “controversy” is totally phony!

Really, the only answer is to erase all references to and depictions of “Native Americans”. Also, lots of place names need to be changed since using Anglicized versions of Native American place names is “cultural appropriation”. Eradicate all evidence that those people ever existed. Then, and only then, can everything be non-racist ... or whatever it is we are supposed to be striving for.

I have never understood the animus towards Native American themed names for sports teams.

Think about it. You want the name of your team to evoke or inspire thoughts of power, skill, coordination, speed, teamwork, triumph, ability, etc.

In other words you want your team name to inspire lots of positive things. Therefore having a team named something related to you is a compliment. It means the person or organization naming the team associates all those positive traits with your demographic. What's not to like?

I'd love to have a team associated with my demographic. However, "middle aged white dudes" probably will never be applied to anything other than maybe a 2nd-tier bowling team...

A snip from wiki

In 2010, sports columnist Damien Cox called on the franchise to retire the “racially insensitive” logo, saying that, “Clearly, no right-thinking person would name a team after an aboriginal figure these days any more than they would use Muslims or Africans or Chinese or any ethnic group to depict a specific sporting notion.”[164] Furthermore, the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) believes that all Native-themed logos, including that of the Blackhawks, “continue to profit from harmful stereotypes originated during a time when white superiority and segregation were common place.”[165]

The Blackhawks have worked with the American Indian Center to help educate their community and fan base by sharing Native American culture and history. Scott Sypolt, executive counsel for the American Indian Center, commented on the logo and name controversy: Joe Podlasek, the executive director of the American Indian Center of Chicago, commented on their relationship, stating, “[The Hawks] are far and away ahead of everyone else in forward-thinking. What they have done is engaged the community. In the other cities (organizations) want nothing to do with native people but yet they’re trying to say they respect us.”[166] However, this stance is markedly different from the one taken by the American Indian Center up until recent years. In 2010, Joe Podlasek stated that, “The stance is very clear. We want the Chicago Blackhawks logo to change. For us, that’s one of our grandfathers. Would you do that with your grandfather’s picture? Take it and throw it on a rug? Walk on it and dance on it?”[167] John Blackhawk, Chairman of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, has suggested that the change in position may be tied to contributions the team has recently begun making to the center: “We all do contributions, but we don’t do it for the sake of wanting to be forgiven for something we’ve done that’s offensive.” [168]

They can have them. Rename them the kneelers.
