CHICAGO — The Chicago Blackhawks say they will continue to use their team name because it honours a Native American leader who has been an inspiration to generations.
"The Chicago Blackhawks name and logo symbolizes an important and historic person, Black Hawk of Illinois’ Sac & Fox Nation, whose leadership and life has inspired generations of Native Americans, veterans and the public," the NHL team said in a statement Tuesday.
"We celebrate Black Hawk’s legacy by offering ongoing reverent examples of Native American culture, traditions and contributions, providing a platform for genuine dialogue with local and national Native American groups. As the team’s popularity grew over the past decade, so did that platform and our work with these important organizations.
"We recognize there is a fine line between respect and disrespect, and we commend other teams for their willingness to engage in that conversation. Moving forward, we are committed to raising the bar even higher to expand awareness of Black Hawk and the important contributions of all Native American people. "
Under renewed pressure to change their name, the NFL’s Washington Redskins announced a "thorough review" of the issue. In baseball, the Cleveland Indians are also looking into it while the Atlanta Braves declined.

Once the race hustlers get their payout and name change from the Indians and the Redskins, they’ll move on to the Braves, and the Blackhawks, and there will be much more pressure.
No one wants to be rasis.
The Blackhawks have one of the most beautiful logos in all sport. The team blows though.
Got to keep that name. They have one of the best jerseys in the NHL.

That team and that name have filled the Stadium since I was a kid.(Now in my 80’s) No need to change it, especially to placate a mob of Marxists.

As with most things the left does, the unintended consequences are staggering.
We need to start whining about the Vikings, “Fighting Irish”, Pirates etc and make sure they get memory holed too.
You may need to add the Browns to that list...you know how things get twisted these days...
As an American with Irish blood, I kinda like the nickname “Fighting Irish”. Makes me sound bad...and nobody messes with me.
Unfortunately apparently that is what they are after.
They could just make it “Hawks” as in the bird but chose to keep the full BlackHawks name.

All of the teams whose names are Indian-derived are paying them s compliment. This “controversy” is totally phony!
Really, the only answer is to erase all references to and depictions of “Native Americans”. Also, lots of place names need to be changed since using Anglicized versions of Native American place names is “cultural appropriation”. Eradicate all evidence that those people ever existed. Then, and only then, can everything be non-racist ... or whatever it is we are supposed to be striving for.
Think about it. You want the name of your team to evoke or inspire thoughts of power, skill, coordination, speed, teamwork, triumph, ability, etc.
In other words you want your team name to inspire lots of positive things. Therefore having a team named something related to you is a compliment. It means the person or organization naming the team associates all those positive traits with your demographic. What's not to like?
I'd love to have a team associated with my demographic. However, "middle aged white dudes" probably will never be applied to anything other than maybe a 2nd-tier bowling team...

What they have done is engaged the community. In the other cities (organizations) want nothing to do with native people but yet they’re trying to say they respect us.”[166] However, this stance is markedly different from the one taken by the American Indian Center up until recent years. In 2010, Joe Podlasek stated that, “The stance is very clear. We want the Chicago Blackhawks logo to change. For us, that’s one of our grandfathers. Would you do that with your grandfather’s picture? Take it and throw it on a rug? Walk on it and dance on it?”[167] John Blackhawk, Chairman of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, has suggested that the change in position may be tied to contributions the team has recently begun making to the center: “We all do contributions, but we don’t do it for the sake of wanting to be forgiven for something we’ve done that’s offensive.” [168]
