It’s the Chinese butterflies
Call me what you want, but I hope it fails completely.
Remember Chinese Drywall?
That is most likely artifacts/distortion from satellite photos.
Failure of the dam could trigger a revolt that ends the Chicom government
And collapse the world economy.
The dam won’t collapse because it is too massive. The problem will be overtopping if the rate of flooding is greater than the discharge capacity. At present the article indicate inflow at 40 trillion acre feet per second and outflow of 28.
Unanswered is can the reservoir contain the excess inflow and can the discharge rate be increased. Otherwise the article is akin to to the yellowstone volcano is going to kill us all journalism
RE: Call me what you want, but I hope it fails completely.
Why would you want millions of innocent people to die?
And thats a bad thing? Why?
Never ever happen. Don't be silly...
Chinese gov has no problem slaughtering as many people as needed to remain in power... Could be millions
Dam folly fully open outflow = 28.....inflow = 40
Some ting. Wong
Expect unexpected
Remember Chinese Drywall?
The poor construction methods, substandard concrete, incessant rain and earthquakes have absolutely nothing to do with the distortion or the impending failure.
Careful with those satellite photos. If you turn on 3d in Google Earth, the dam looks curved and distorted. If 2d, it looks straight. My interest was piqued, because that much distortion would break equipment, esp. finely aligned turbines.
No. No. No.
Yes, that photo has been linked and shared many times: But it is a “dostorted” photo! THESE SATELLITE PICTURES ARE NOT A VALID IMAGE OF THE DAM.
The photo is a pixallated and focus-distorted satellite image that attempts to re-focus and “straighten” the dam image, but the rough algorithm fails. It is the correction of the satellite image that creates the “waves” in the image of the dam face, NOT the actual dam face. These induced corrections make it appear that the Three Gorges dams has 10-15 foot curves, when the actual dam remains straight within 1/2 inch of its planned position.
My Dad, a long-time dam engineer and designer, inspected the construction site as part of his American Concrete Institute leadership/analysis position - He pointed out other problems and many places where the Chinese stole equipment and copied technology and designs from their Western engineering "consultants" and firms, but the fundamental design is as valid as it ever was. Faults are media advertising = eco-terrorism-fear mongering.
Don’t get me wrong, it is poorly constructed, but that wavy photo is mostly distorted.
You missed them. There have been many over the years.
I came across a mathematical study the other day in reference to the water pressure against the dam walls of the Three Gorges dam which was rather impressive with a conservative estimate of about 25 million tons of pressure. You may find this short movie clip on YouTube by searching for FORCE OF WATER ON CHINA’S 3 GORES DAM WALL.
As far as the stability of this dam is concerned, from time to time I run across the comment that the base of this dam is not anchored to the bedrock beneath. The thought crossed my mind that this may have been done on purpose, why? From what I understand is that this area is subject to frequent quakes and needless to say, should there be a solid connection to the bedrock below it would transfer any motion throughout the whole dam.
With the dam being constructed from individual blocks any severe motion of the ground beneath could place quite a bit of stress on any of the individual sections forcing them to move. This along with the enormous water pressure behind the dam wall, could quite possible expedite the demise of this dam. For this reason I believe, maybe I am wrong, they choose to let the ground slide independently from the structure resting on top.
Either way, I would not feel comfortable or safe living anywhere downstream of this dam. Not only that, but should this dam give way I would not be surprised to see that it would usher in some big political changes, which would be to the benefit of several neighboring countries let alone Hong Kong
surfs up hop-sing !!
