Two American aircraft carriers were conducting exercises in the disputed South China Sea on Saturday, the U.S. navy said, as China also carried out military drills.
Both countries have accused each other of stoking tensions in the strategic waterway, at a time of strained relations between the two nations over a number of issues including, coronavirus and Hong Kong.
The USS Nimitz and USS Ronald Reagan were carrying out operations and exercises in the South China Sea "to support a free and open Indo-Pacific," the navy said in a statement.
It did not say exactly where the exercises were being conducted in the South China Sea, which extends for some 900 miles and 90 percent of which is claimed by China, despite the protests of its neighbors.

Not comparable. China is trying to exert territoriality over the South China sea and the US is maintaining them as international waters. They are basing this on artificial islands and islands claimed by other countries.
US monitors our coastal waters with the Coast Guard. If China sent a carrier group here, we’d meet them and escort them wherever they go—with two more carrier groups. I think we have 12 or 13.
I doubt they have the logistics chain to sail here.
What makes you think that? Please explain.

Define "close proximity. Do you mean close proximity like how close China is positioning it's troops along the Indian border? Do you mean close proximity like China is flying planes over Taiwan airspace? How about as close as China is placing it's forces to the Spratly Island Sea or near the Senkaku Islands?
Or do you mean what if China had some warships in International waters like our warships are? Please clarify what you mean by close proximity.
...or like the panama canal?
THIS country has the money that China WISHES it had. WE spend our hard-earned tax money on keeping our country safe.
OUR "saber rattling" tells:
1. US not to be worried about attacks from outside. We WON'T forger 9/11.
2. the WORLD that we have the "bigger gun," know how, when and where to use it.
3. tells the world that we aren't afraid to use it.
4. tells the world that we have a president who is GOING to protect us no matter how loudly the Dem leaders, "The Squad" and other such aholes linked to Pelosi will bleat, moan, groan and otherwise try their DARNDEST to sabotage any semblance of common sense or common decency.
5. tells CHINA that we are on to their lies, despotism, communism and disregard for ANY laws, human or divine.
The Chinese believe in TWO things: luck and money.
--Well they will NEVER, EVER have the money they want and WE will ALWAYS have TONS more DOLLARS that they do. We EARNED what we have. So, sad to say, have they. Their history is not in the least benign towards their own. For heaven's sake they used to DUMP female babies down their wells. They FORCED the "one-baby" law on their people! Who knows what atrocities they will force on their own people!
--They are plumb outta LUCK when it comes to intimidating the USA. They can turn inward and murder, imprison, torture and rob their own people blind but they AIN'T gonna do ANY such thing to us.

Good song. Lot of things involved in that group of people that will be forever unknown - too bad one of them had to be named after that one-term peanut farmer.
Both of your mentioned targets of money are a waste of our tax dollars but you will never convince the likes of the Dem. leaders, The Squad and those sad sacks who follow them.
Those Dems are desperate and they know Trump will win so they go as FAR LEFT as they can. That is their sole tactic. They remind me forcibly of the Chinese and North Korean leaders..."people" be damned.
We'll see what November brings about. Either way nothing will change for me. I own my own home, get a great retirement, had a husband who believed that PROPERTY was a good investment, pray A LOT and had a relative who died recently and left me her home...and it will give me yet another large "safety net."
The normal voter Dems who have and use brains simply won't bother to vote this cycle.
