Theres nothing wrong with being financially responsible.
We have no debt and are not slaves to anyone financially.
Not all the suggestions are capitulation as some claim. Some are wise financial planning.
Debt is bondage to another. If you dont owe them, they cant control you.

Absolutely agreed. We paid off our mortgage early, home equity loan and most of our charge cards by making extra payments. Still have a couple of minor card balances for stuff we purchased recently-we will pay those off over 3-6 months period.
Since we are retired, as long as the pension and social security holds out we have enough money to live on and continue to save now that we don’t have a house payment etc. So we invest every month in extra food supplies and stick the rest in savings for the rainy day funds.
In 2009, we started gardening in earnest and now have over 1000 sq. feet of gardening space. We preserve some for winter use. Our dependence on the grocery has been reduced as time goes on.
We have books on developing your own soil-without the expensive amendments typically used on the big factory farms—ie self sufficiency/reliance.
Every year, we work on more self-sufficiency. This year we will have a root cellar and an extra holding tank for water from the well. We are starting to study options for backup energy to run the well. We have a portable generator which has been sufficient so far. But longer term solutions are being explored.
We still have a land line. Our cell phones are flip phones for emergency use in case of car trouble etc. My Social Media is Free Republic.
Our ancestors crossed this country in covered wagons, and survived many years without electricity, TV, cell phones etc. We’ll keep preparing for the worst and hope for the best.
Sounds like us except for the covered wagons part.
