Russia: 'Nothing will stop' Germany gas pipeline
EU Observer ^ | 30 Jun 2020, 07:15 | Andrew Rettman

“Nothing will stop” Nord Stream 2, Russia has said, after new US sanctions on a pipeline that is seeing the EU side with Russia against its transatlantic ally.

“Our view remains the same: nothing will stop the finalization of Nord Stream 2 [NS2]. And we leave to Germany and other EU member states to pass judgment on such US measures,” Russia’s ambassador to the EU, Vladimir Chizhov, told EUobserver on Monday (29 June).

The Russian-owned firm building the pipe from Russia to Germany, the Nord Stream 2 consortium in Switzerland, was equally bullish.

“Our shareholder and the five financial investors are fully committed to the project, as are Nord Stream 2’s suppliers,” it told this website, also on Monday.

The Russian firm Gazprom is its main shareholder and the five EU energy firms co-financing the €10 billion scheme are Engie, OMV, Shell, Uniper, and Wintershall.

They spoke after US congressmen tabled a bill last week called the Protecting Europe’s Energy Security Clarification Act.

The US move would impose penalties on individuals, such as corporate persons and shareholders, involved in building NS2, according to Alan Riley, a legal expert at US think-tank the Atlantic Council.

“The bill reaches persons who ’facilitate’ pipe-laying activities,” he said.

But it would not enable the US to go after German officials who issued permits or mayors of ports where NS2-linked ships had docked, as Berlin had claimed last week, Riley added.

“Arms or emanations of the state are not caught by the sanctions bill,” he said. …

Why should we be involved in this at all? If the Germans, want to buy Russian gas, we have no business telling them they can’t do it. And why would we want to save a Marxist country like Germany from itself?

Think of this as a Molotov-Ribbentrop redux. There’s a reason Trump put a stop to this.

This is stupid. Germany is already buying gas with NordStream 1 & wants to buy more. All we are doing is pushing them away from us with stupid sanctions.

So you think that letting the modern-day Molotov-Ribbentrop go ahead will somehow benefit the USA?

The very notion of a united Europe is about anti-Americanism, and the worst kind of such. And historically, cooperation between the two entities involved in Nord Stream 2 was a precursor to war.

Most probably why Trump wants to withdraw troops from Germany.

I lived there 3 years during the cold war as Army intelligence. I kissed the ground when I was finally back in USA.

Bring everyone home, President Trump! The Germans will regret it and our soldiers will love you!

The Poles are begging us for moving U.S. forces in Germany,

“We’ll take them! We’ll take them!”

Poland is a true ally of the U.S. Germany was our ally only because the Soviets were breathing down their necks. Putin knows you catch more flies with sugar than vinegar. Merkel apparently agrees.

Germany and Russia are not natural enemies. But the Poles hate Russians to the very core of their souls.

How do I know? Our tragically deceased Polish priest lived in Siberia and visited Germany a lot before emigrating here.

He said he’d take Germans any day over Russians.

I don’t have a problem with Germany doing this, but I do believe it will bite them in the butt in the future.

You would if you understood the history behind it.

Trump had a reason to put a stop to it.

No; the Germans want all of the Americans gone, so they have an excuse to implement their decades-old EU military plans. That’s part of what this cooperation with Russia is about. When the cat’s away, et cetera.

That old agreement lasted 1.9 years.

I think Russia will sabre-rattle when it needs to spike prices for its own sake and Germany will be running away, yet again.

With no Poland involvement.

Why? Because we have been negotiating deals to sell them large quantities of LNG over the last year, and beyond that spending billions in defense to protect them from the Russians. Adds up to a vested interest in what the Germans are doing when they make themselves dependent on a hostile regime for their energy supplies. It’s called a sellout, and we don’t like it.

This would seriously undermine Poland’s security.
