Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, a former Green Party councillor has daubed the Charles Dickens museum with the words "Dickens Racist, Dickens Racist". that he will make "no apology" for what he has done because the author was a "notorious genocidal racist". Ian Driver from Kent, said he will make "no apology" for what he has done because the author was a "notorious genocidal racist".
Mr Driver cited the famous character of Fagin in Oliver Twist as being an anti-Semitic stereotype.
The words were daubed on The Dickens House Museum in Broadstairs, Kent.
But, father of three Mr Driver told how he perceived this area of Kent to have an underbelly of racism.
Mr Driver said today: "I have been campaigning for quite a long time about what I regard to be institutional racism in Thanet and Broadstairs in particular.
anything about it.
"I think it is quite demeaning towards black people and there is no justification for it.
"But after the Black Lives Matter protests and seeing people learn their local history like the statue of Edward Colston in Bristol, I decided to do some digging into my hometown of 12 years.
"Charles Dickens is celebrated in Broadstairs like a local hero and money maker just because he wrote a few books here.
"In reality, he was a notorious genocidal racist and should be depicted as such.
"That's the real Dickens."
The former councillor explained how Charles Dickens was an enthusiastic supporter of British Imperialism.
He said: "He supported the Morant Bay rebellion in Jamaica in 1865.
"He also supported the suppression of the Indian rebellion in 1857 saying their race should be wiped out and also referred to black and Asian people as savages.
"There is no defending him yet there is a whole museum dedicated to him on my doorstep with no mention of his other life as a racist.
"The National Portrait Gallery even has a few paragraphs explaining this other side of history.
"I think it's important to get both sides and a balanced view."
I am glad Mr. Driver cleared all this up for us. I always thought that Dickens was certainly one of the greatest writers in the English language. But all along, I’ve been wrong!
I think it would help Trump’s numbers if brought in military and wiped the streets clean.
In western movies. They brought in the cavalry and the audience would erupt into applause.
Its not working to let them roam.
Or a guy in a Monty Python sketch.
Ha. Just wait till the techies discover Lewis Charrol
Dickens cider?
You’re in for some great annoyances, then.
Thanks for the heads-up.
Pretty good for an on-the-spot Limerick.
Very good
I actually read “Great Expectations” in 9th Grade. That work could be called “Watching Paint Dry”, as far as I’m concerned.
Stupid post.
I think of “Ivor, the Engine Driver” from “A Quick One While He’s Away”

A Tale of Two Cities ?
Oliver Twist ?
A Christmas Carol ?
David Copperfield ?
Both Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoyevsky were admirers. Dostoyevsky commented: “We understand Dickens in Russia, I am convinced, almost as well as the English, perhaps even with all the nuances. It may well be that we love him no less than his compatriots do. And yet how original is Dickens, and how very English!”
Tolstoy referred to David Copperfield as his favourite book, and he later adopted the novel as a model for his own autobiographical reflections.
French writer Jules Verne called Dickens his favourite writer, writing his novels “stand alone, dwarfing all others by their amazing power and felicity of expression.”
In 1944, Soviet film director and film theorist Sergei Eisenstein wrote an essay on Dickens influence on cinema, such as cross-cuttingwhere two stories run alongside each other, as seen in novels such as Oliver Twist.
June 30, 1857, Charles Dickens reads from A Christmas Carol at St. Martin’s Hall in London—his first public reading.
They’ll be coming after Kipling next, if they aren’t already.
There’s some really scary s**t emerging right now — and this has nothing to do with Trump.
These leftist cultural revolution types need to be put down hard. This is going to get very bloody if it isn’t stopped now.
...And then they put him in a can!
“Both Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoyevsky were admirers”
That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement. I also find those two to be greatly overrated and boring. Chapters and chapters of character development and little plot progression - figuratively speaking.
There are many books about him and also some on his friends, that give a full measure of the man. And yes, having been a HUGE fan of most of his work, I've read most of them.
No, a LOT of his characters do NOT do "the right thing" at all; quite the opposite. Though I'll grant you, the ending were usually "happy Hollywoodish endings"...where the villains were punished and the good guys won out. All quite unrealistic!
Re Pickwick..his most unreadable, dreadful book, with quite unloveible characters!
