Two San Diego Police Department officers have been placed on paid leave after they shot and wounded a robbery suspect who pointed a gun at one of the officers during a confrontation in downtown Saturday night.
The suspect, Hurtado Ibarra, 25, of San Diego, suffered life-threatening injuries. He was hospitalized in an intensive care unit.
The incident remains under investigation by the District Attorneys Office.
FR has a fair amount of expert commentary on guns, and you are obviously one of the experts.

Stolen weapon?
Prior to retiring, I conducted preliminary inquiries into allegations made by inmates against detention officers. I spent hours doing the investigations.Once, I watched over twelve hours of video for one allegation. In each case, I was able to prove a negative, my officers were innocent of the charges lodged by the inmate.
I wanted to charge the inmates for lying and filing false police reports. I was told there was a court case some time back where a judge ruled that the inmates could not be charged because it could deter a legitimate complaint from being filed.
That’s a sad commentary.
It’s ok, it’s ok, meds are good for you ( :
Certain groups that clamored for those body cams will be clamoring to have them removed; a cop friend was saved from allegations of racial slurs by a microphone on his tie. No charges against the false accuser, of course...
I would love to see that vid, if you can find it again.
Because PDs and their citizens cant afford all that data storage.
The more honest of the racially driven groups do correctly point to two things -
1. That *some* departments and officers *have* been proven to be doing exactly what they were accused of.
2. That many marginal officers will not misbehave if they know they are being watched.
And say that the cameras should stay or be expanded in scope. However, this isn’t common for the usual large groups that are just using these issues as a springboard to power and money.
Data storage is still cheap. I have run helmet cameras on my motorcycle for over a decade now and I find that I can fit an entire day of riding into 128gb.
You can get unlimited cloud storage for relatively cheap on a per-account basis, too. The tech exists and it’s not that expensive. Maybe stop spending money maintaining unneeded MRAPs gifted to them by the Feds and they’ll easily have the money for it.
Here’s one that goes the other way - cop caught planting drugs on multiple people via his body camera.

Cameras. Need. To. Be. Locked. On.
This was an incident in Texas in 2018.

It does help if the state’s laws get updated - many states’ laws don’t seem to recognize that people would make false reports.
Another exhibit for why officers should not be able to turn off cameras:

And you wonder why I have about as little regard for judges as I have for any other shyster lawyer??
I’ve personally seen judges do some truly BRIZARRE & OBVIOUSLY CORRUPT things from the bench.

No police - only social workers available!
Even when they need to use the restroom?
“Good cops have nothing to fear from everything being on video.”
I respectfully disagree, in part. While I do support cops wearing bodycams and do agree they do more good than harm, the fact is that in the current environment perfectly lawful encounters between law enforcement and the public being caught on camera are being criminalized. Even when we are right we are being destroyed.
This is why I (and many others) am retiring. May God help those in the communities we serve as the mayhem increases as we necessarily retreat.
As and where allowed by law, yes. Note the example of the cops turning their cams off, planting evidence then turning the cams back on that I’ve linked above.
My guess is he's probably a felon and if I'm not mistaken you can still buy black powder weapons on line or mail order without a background check. Still intimidating as hell to a cashier and will still work if needed though.
Well said sir, well said indeed.
