The fact they stole the Jeep is a key piece of this situation.

If the driver owned the vehicle, he would have known its limits and he would have wanted to take care of it. A Jeep can take some abuse but nowhere near as much as they show on television and in the movies.

The only person I've heard claiming it was stolen is an unnamed Chopistani. It was just as likely a parent's Jeep. Second, the shooting started before they struck the barrier.
