Mississippi House passes bill to take Confederate symbol off state flag

Mississippi’s state House of Representative on Sunday passed a bill to remove the Confederate flag from the state flag, with the Senate expected to pass the measure later today.

The lower chamber voted 91-23 to remove the symbol from the flag, which has flown since 1894. It was the nation’s last state flag containing the symbol. The legislation, written by House Speaker Philip Gunn (R), calls for the current flag to be immediately removed, after which a nine-person commission would be appointed to design a new one, Mississippi Today reported.

Under the terms of the bill, the commission would recommend a new flag design by mid-September, with Mississippi voters okaying or vetoing the design on Nov. 3, the publication reported.

Gov. Tate Reeves (R) has said he will sign any flag bill that reaches his desk. The bill is subject to change before final Senate passage, but under the terms of the bill, Reeves, Gunn and Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann would each appoint three people to the commission, according to the publication.

“Even the state flags of TX and NC incorporate a star & bars.”

The Texas Flag was adopted in 1839.

That was before Texans were foolish enough to join the Confederacy.

That’s even before Texas was a state.

This is one of the most conservative states in the USA. Sad.

Was. Mississippi proves once again there is no opposition party to the progressive corportist agenda.

When this many people in Mississippi, of all places, are scared to offend the over dogs, how many people are going to take a risk to buck the system in November?

It’s not the people doing this. It’s chamber of commerce bought and paid for corportist politicians doing this. Until they fear base voters nothing will change.

“So the city of Vicksburg has not celebrated the Fourth of July since it was captured by General Grant.”

Time for Vicksburg to move in from their thrashing at the hands of the USA.

The fear narrative was no one would do business with Mississippi.

It was a self-fulfilling prophesy. The Liberal Lynch Mob would be sure there would be boycotts.

As usual, the LAME STREAM MEDIA got it WRONG !

HC 79 Mississippi House Concurrent Resolution 2020 Regular Session passed the House 84 to 35 with 1 not voting.
It passed the Senate 36 to 14.
Here's the text of the Bill House Concurrent Resolution 79
Now that being what they voted on, they way they worded the bill, they give no chance of keeping the Mississippi flag the way it is now. These coward refuse to defend our heritage.
These cowards don;t give a damn about what we the citizens of Mississippi really want.
They just want to get the "Flag Controversy" off of their plate.
We really have a sorry bunch of politicians in Mississippi.

The only ones worth keeping are the ones who voted "No" !

Will the south secede again? Or will we settle for the US of Bosnization? Its coming, slowly, but it may gain speed.

There is nothing to secede. “The south” is already gone.

Southern heritage is being erased. The rest of the county’s heritage will not be far behind.

I believe that Scotland might object to your description of the St. Andrews cross as being of the Confederacy. Scotland has been using it on their flag since at least 1542. This was some 319 years before the Confederacy started using it.

Imperial Russia might object as well, as the Imperial Russian Navy used the Cross of St. Andrews as their ensign starting in 1712 (149 years before the Confederacy).

Being pushed by the football coaches at Ole Miss and Mississippi State. They think it hurts their recruiting of athletes.
