Excellent News Alert!
Actually philosophy majors are among the smartest students. And if you’re smart it doesn’t much matter what your major is.
Right now, I’m more proud of my son the trucker. He works for a lumberyard and is responsible for keeping hundreds of men employed
Good for your Son. Most people don’t realize how important truckers are to replenish their local stores to continue their lifestyles. I do, and thank your Son from an old Navy veteran.
I call bullshit. Philosophy is mental masturbation.
I agree with the need for STEM - math, science, engineering. I would also support investment in degrees for accounting, industrial design, architecture, data analysis (a huge emerging field).
STEM education needs to begin in primary and secondary schools where years of social engineering have watered down curriculums to the point where there are not enough US citizen students feeding STEM programs.
The data is there to back it up.
Dull people aren’t too interested in complex intellectual questions, but smart people are. And smart people can be valuable employees in the right industries.
Good point, it does take some smarts to understand the different philosophy disciplines. However, what industries are looking for philosophy degrees other than teaching? Those degrees usually wind up in Human Resources like all other social science degrees. HR is a low-paying limited advancement position even in the biggest companies. Plus, they are the equivalent of police internal affairs, part-time therapists (Mommy), pissy conflict resolution between employees, and usually the firing entity. Crappy job.
Any complex business has room for really smart people. Doesn’t so much matter what sort of trade knowledge they bring to start. They can think and write and persuade others. You are just really wrong on where “social science” degree holders end up. (And really smart people do not tend to work in HR.) I get that you’re a military vet, but where have you got your skewed view of business and the private sector?
