A growing movement to get police officers out of US schools saw a major victory this week when Oaklands school board voted to eliminate the school districts dedicated police department.
But in Chicago and Los Angeles, despite protests by youth activists, support from teachers unions, and an outpouring of public support, school boards voted to keep police in public schools, at least for now.
Since the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, calls to shrink police budgets and invest taxpayers dollars in non-violent strategies to promote public safety have gained political support across the country.
Minneapoliss city council has vowed to disband its police department entirely, while major cities like New York and Los Angeles are contemplating big cuts to police department budgets. Elijah McClain: Colorado appoints special prosecutor to investigate 2019 police killing Read more
In Oakland, one of the cities that has seen large peaceful protests in support of defunding police, the city council voted this week to shave only a small amount off the police budget and wait to consider bigger cuts including a potential $150m reduction in the police budget.

Actually they want to rename it and put a layer of bureaucracy on top of it.
That’ll work out real good. Now the bullies get to run the schools without any opposition. I’d sure hate to be a white kid going to one of those schools. The revenge bullseye is on them without anyone to protect them.
All Freepers out there should already be homeschooling. If you’re not, it’s your fault.
What evidence do they have about police abusing students, and where do the council members’ children attend school?
Gun free zone, no police allowed. Yeah that’s the ticket. Send your kids to the shooting gallery.
In a related story, a group of parents tried to get the teacher’s union to give a Crap about the kids and Antifa arrived to beat the Crap out of the parents.
Those officers were in the schools because student behavior warranted it.
This will not end well.
Oh good....Rochester NY....back to them old school knifing days!!
They are hoping for a mass school shooting one month before the election.
Mass shooter invite, good move. Who do you blame it on now? Oh thats right confiscate the guns and we will be all ok
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Hoping???
I'd say *planning*. It's likely in the works already.
the grapes of wrath are ripe.
Police in schools is a BAD idea. The REAL solution is ARMED school staff.
Teachers, janitors, bus drivers, administrators, librarians, lunch room staff, hall monitors, coaches, ANYONE!
Not ALL staff. Trained volunteers from ALL areas of of the school.
When/if an active shooter situation happens, you should have an armed staff member RIGHT THERE to IMMEDIATELY deal with the shooter.
You would have armed staff to protect the students should the active shooter move around the school.
We have seen just how well /s, having police officers try to protect our schools.
Always in the wrong place and THEN, fail to respond for fear for their own lives. The sharpest blades don’t get assigned to protect schools.
Perps would know where and how to AVOID the assigned police.
Also they are easy to pick out, THEY WEAR POLICE UNIFORMS!
They would have NO IDEA which teachers/staff members are armed!
This is a “no brainer”.
