As I mentioned on another thread, those who fought to perpetuate slavery did not call the conflict the Civil War. Confederate vice president Alexander Hamilton Stephens coined the name War Between the States, and other Southern names included the War for Southern Independence and the War of Northern (or Yankee) Aggression. The term "Civil War" was popularized by Abraham Lincoln, although at the time, War of the Rebellion was also used in the North.
In any case, if you want to get a degree in American History, looks like Oregon or Oregon State are to be avoided.
Some words bad. Remind us of “things” that we never shut up about anyway.
Thin-skinned I am not. As far as no one else being able to tell the difference between war and a game, I seriously doubt that, which is why you’re the one saying that, not me.
Go try to pick a fight with someone else.
The word “Civil War” is not bad? What about the many Roman Civil Wars? or the English Civil War?
You imply it is “trivializing the ‘Civil War’ as if the American Civil War was the only civil war in history instead of the hundreds the there have been; and that people are too stupid to recognize the difference between the characterization of a football game and the real American Civil War.
I “imply” no such thing; I stated it as my opinion and only as my opinion. You are the one going on about other civil wars and people not being able to tell the difference.
Stop trying to put words in my mouth. It’s a form of argument used by fools.
*****”Changing this name is overdue as it represents a connection to a war fought to perpetuate slavery,” *****
It was Republicans uprising to END slavery, and they won. Fortunately the Democrats lost the war and the Republicans freed the slaves. Perpetuating was on the DEMOCRATS side.
Beverages will no longer be served in Dixie cups.
“...It trivializes the Civil War.”
Yeah, no implication there.
What the hell is your problem? Can you not read? I said that it was not an implication, but a statement of my opinion.
I should have been tipped off when you signed your first post to me “dumbass”, and couldn’t even spell dumbass.
Go away, dumbass.
Yes you now say it was just your opinion, but not in your first post, so just own it.
Go away, dumbass.
I just deleted the Guns N’ Roses song ‘Civil War’ from my play list. I am feeling a little more woke now. /sarc
Its ironic that you mentioned that particular song.
In my car, I keep the radio on a local classic rock station. Around a month ago, they played Civil War. I hadnt heard that song since college.
Last night, while driving home from shopping, they played the song again. Its interesting how, after all these years, they are playing it more.
This may sound silly but, listening to the lyrics, I became depressed and anxious. The song sounds uncomfortably appropriate for current events.
That being said, its now on my playlist.
If you would like more information about what's happening in Oregon, please FReepmail me.
Please send me your name by FReepmail if you want to be on this list.
For decades, the annual Texas-OU (OK) football game was termed The Red River Shootout. It was played mid-way between the two schools at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
Then, some of the wimpy folks decided the name promoted violence, so it was changed to The Red River Rivalry. The game is now played in Arlington at Jerry’s World (ATT Stadium).
The word Civil War is not bad?
Technically, I it is a phrase, and the phrase is, I believe, ironic. “Civil Wars” tend to be very uncivil. Unless one has a dark sense of humour, I can see that one would find the phrase objectionable, and on the grounds of snowflakeness, worthy of being banned.
Perhaps ours at least should be generally referred to as the War of Northern Aggression to avoid offending people by this irony, and maybe this term could be extended to all other uses of the phrase.
We called it Civil War
It was technically a war for secession
English Civil war was accurate as was Spanish civil war
Mexicos revolution early 1900s was a civil war
As was the leftist troubles in Colombia the past 100 plus years
War of the Roses was a civil war too
Nicaragua Sandies versus Somoza and Comtras versus Sandies
Castros insurgency
All civil wars
The south was fighting for an autonomous homeland like the Boers or Ibo in Nigeria ..Biafra
Im unaware of a distinctive term
Quebec separatism would be similar
Or Punjab or Kashmir or the Kurds
And so on
Missouri and Kansas used to call their annual football game the “Border War” after the Civil War conflict. They tried to PC it by changing the name to “Border Showdown” but nobody called it that until it ended in 2011.
